Accessibility tip:

If you don't use a screenreader to access the internet, you may be unaware that case matters in hashtags. Sadly, Mastodon tends to lower case them even when you're trying to camel case them.

If you lower case a multiword hashtag, the screenreader reads it like it's one word - making gibberish out of it. If you camel case it (capitalize the start of each word even though you're not spacing between words), the screenreader can differentiate the words.

Thanks to @snwh

And thank you Joannie, @igalia and the community for all the ongoing work and support.

I am looking for examples of an app, document or website that is technically conformant to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) but is, in fact, still quite inaccessible from a practical perspective. I'd like to get my hands on something concrete so I can demonstrate how this happens.

does anyone have a way of remembering when to use for ... of and for ... in in ?

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@ben @joelanman I literally just always use for...of, and convert my Objects into arrays before looping them.

for (let [key, item] of Object.entries(lunch)) {
 console.log(key);
 console.log(item);
}

I recommend designers learn to read frontend code and practice screen reader use

That way they can understand generally how code affects screen reader interactions

It doesn’t replace talking with screen reader users but does help make those conversations more fruitful when you know basics.

We urgently need more @emf sponsors - if we do not secure more, we will have to make tough decisions.

Tickets cover base costs, but sponsors pay for lovely things like our free childcare and talk transcription. Every little helps!

I don’t know how often free labor is requested by most folks in tech but it sure is requested a lot from people who focus on accessibility.

To put it simply, I do not accept unpaid work, and my peers in this space also do not.

Please be mindful that our time is valuable too, just like anyone’s.

I love waiting for stuff that is already loaded.

Safari on the left super responsive, zero delay. Safari Technology Preview on the right, it takes like half a second until the text is in place.

Of course, the transitions also don’t support reduced motion settings, so they are a great additional way to make your users feel sick. There are no website settings to turn them off.

(CW: Video and video in the linked post are potentially vestibular triggers.) https://front-end.social/@bramus/112252063739648992

Video is split screen, klicking on content on the left reveals it without delay. On the right, an animation is triggered that takes about half a second. You just need to wait until the animation is settled to interact with it. And it is a full-page animation, so easily a vestibular trigger.
