Turned this week's rant about ongoing sloppy security at Experian into a blog post. Thanks to everyone here who helped with the research.

It's Still Easy for Anyone to Become You at Experian

In the summer of 2022, KrebsOnSecurity documented the plight of several readers who had their accounts at big-three consumer credit reporting bureau Experian hijacked after identity thieves simply re-registered the accounts using a different email address. Sixteen months later, Experian clearly has not addressed this gaping lack of security. I know that because my account at Experian was recently hijacked, and the only way I could recover access was by recreating the account.

I think we need to back up and say “books are important.” “Literature is important.” Deep down, the book banners know that books can change lives, that’s why they want them banned. But I think we need to openly acknowledge this. Science is also important. It teaches us WHY we are. But books and stories teach us HOW we are. HOW we can be. I’m sure you’ve already heard this: stories should be mirrors that reflect ourselves and they should be windows, so we can see out into the world. We see HOW we are, and HOW the world is. We explore how we are and how the world. Empathy is one of the many things borne of reading. Empathy for others, yes. But for ourselves, too. Books and stories are so important. It’s why I work in a library, and why I have 57 streaming services. I’m addicted to stories. I’m addicted to knowing both WHY and HOW. People who are not are genuinely uncurious about the world. They’re happy in their bubble. And they want to pull everyone else into it. Stay curious.

An underrated thing about there not being an algorithm here is you can basically be inactive for two months and then write a message that’s seen by tens of thousands of people. You don’t need to keep gaming the system in order to get visibility.

I lost a deal with a dream client last week.

I’ve… been struggling to recover from that. My self-esteem is still shattered, and I don’t know how long it will take me until I feel confident enough to get on another sales call.

And that doubt brought back an old nemesis - “the dread". An awful feeling in the back of my mind. My brain reminding me of my trauma.

I wrote about dealing with this in my :

Don't try to succeed despite the monsters.

Succeed BECAUSE of the monsters.

Take a baseball bat and smash the god damn monsters to a bloody pulpy mess.

Follow whatever your path is.

Remember the golden rule, no failure hurts as much as the regret of not trying.

I'm sorry you are going through this. I don't know you, but I 100% identify with exactly how you feel. It doesn't matter how much good stuff happens, that low self worth just won't quit. Wish I had an answer, but just offering support in the form of "me, too". Your beautiful writing about an ugly thing gives me comfort in feeling less alone. Sending love.

When Taylor Swift’s albums got acquired to make billions of dollars for a company, she didn’t roll over and go, welp, guess I gotta stick with this shitty exploitative system. She re-recorded and released everything under her own copyright so she gets all the royalties! In the same way, we have to rebuild our spaces that got acquired so that we own them ourselves. Our data. Our governance. Not extractive systems that feed their growth. That’s the promise of the fediverse.

Meanwhile, regulators continue to completely not care about regulating the credit bureaus. Specifically, Experian.

Last summer I wrote about how a ton of Experian accounts were getting hacked when ID thieves would simply create a new account using the target's personal info but with a new phone # and email, and Experian's website would be like, okay, sure, so you're the new owner. No problem. We'll just lock out the old user and give them no way to get back in. Except to, yeah, create another profile. And on it goes.

Well, it looks like Experian is still sitting on its thumbs because someone has hijacked my Experian credit file now.

Whenever you read a negative story about renewable energy, electric vehicles or heat pumps in the media ask yourself:

Could it be that vested interest groups funded and placed the story?

Rarely exposed but this stuff goes on all the time.

Look, . I’m a Microsoft 365 subscriber and a OneDrive user. I wouldn’t pay for it if I didn’t think it was good, or at the very least, a good value.

But you need to rein in this obnoxiousness. This sort of behavior is more likely to repel customers than attract them. And it makes people like me, people who are often consulted for their perspective on tech, less likely to recommend your products to others.

Seriously, knock it off. https://mastodon.social/@verge/111377292158910307

Right. There's been a lot of talk about and it's place here on the fediverse of late.
Whether you're blind, deaf or sighted, I'd be curious to not only have you fill out the relevant choice, but feel free to respond to this with more detail if you like.

I don't remember the first time I heard the phrase "pattern or practice" in the context of workplace culture, but I do know it changed my perspective both as a worker and manager...

This AMA hosted by the Albert's List Careers community looks at several areas:

  • State vs. federal law
  • COVID-19 and return to office
  • Overtime/working off the clock
  • (il)legal questions during job interviews
  • Layoffs and terminations
  • Hostile work environments
  • Retaliation

The next time you see high gas prices, remember that Exxon posted $9.1 billion in earnings for the third quarter of this year. The money is coming out of consumers’ pockets and going back to Exxon’s wealthy shareholders, to which it gave $8.1 billion in Q3.
