I've been making a big mistake: I think of myself as a marketer, and forget to think as a business executive.

Concerns about financial planning, pipeline, business model, service mix, hiring and onboarding, etc. – felt irrelevant. Like topics for stuffy business dudes to talk about in their giant boardrooms.

I fell into the trap of thinking that if I did well and we did a damn good job, the would run itself. (Spoiler: it didn’t)

No, generative AI will not give you personalized movies from a book. Not in 5 years, not in ever.

Just please listen to the fucking grift generative AI stans are trying to make you believe. Not a single word they’re saying has any merit whatsoever.

Generative AI is complete and utter shit. More computing resources will just generate more shit faster.

I don’t understand how these people aren’t laughed off the Internet, it’s such a transparent bullshit hype.

Earlier this week I made a snarky toot about paying open source maintainers. The snarkyness perhaps covered up the underlying message, which is something I strongly believe in.

Criticizing open source maintainers for figuring out a way to get paid for their — however imperfect the tactic — is wrong.

If we're serious about open source sustainability, we need to be okay with — no, more than that, we need to celebrate — any tactic a maintainer uses to get paid.

As I like to remember every week, even though I am very often very homesick and sad about leaving Asia, being in the Americas also means I’m exposed to a range of cuisines and flavors and ingredients I never was.

I think anyone who has a national lens on food is short sighted, for example the people who say ‘food sucks in the US’. It just tells me you aren’t an adventurous eater who goes out of your way to try the immense immigrant foods here.

On a lighter note ...

Remember the wax lips pic a few days ago? I snapped that with Photo Booth on my desktop--I have it set to snap 4 photos in quick succession w/ 1 click. Today, I was tossing those photos, & I noticed 1 of those pics featured my husband walking in the room to find me wearing wax lips at my desk. I can't stop laughing. Just look at his face. OMG. Omg, omg, omg. 😂 🤣 😭

AI-generated “art” fanatics have a new claim to support the supremacy of their format: that mathematics is only now being introduced into artistic practices. That they have essentially invented math-based artwork and pioneered it in a way that has made human creativity obsolete.

This idea should not be given currency. The truth is that mathematics and art have been deeply intertwined for centuries.

@mariyadelano I haven't been ignoring your question, I've been wondering if I could explain in a series of Stract tools. 🙃

researchbuzz,
@researchbuzz@researchbuzz.masto.host avatar

@mariyadelano Here's what I'm thinking. Six tools:

  1. Basic Search - You know.
  2. The Low Down - When you're looking up something specific for basic information. Would search reference sites, large news sites (ABC, BBC), etc. only.
  3. WTF Is Happening - For searching breaking news/current events. Would restrict to news/current resources.

Three more in the next post. 1/2

an air conditioner doesn't "make the air colder," strictly speaking. technically, it moves the heat from the inside air to the outside air.

similarly, a light bulb doesn't "emit light." it sucks up the darkness and puts it outside. that's why it's dark at night, because people have their lights on inside.

Did you know you can easily search through your own Mastodon posts?

Just include from:me in the search field.

Instead of this, you can include in:library to show posts you have interacted with or written yourself.

If you want to search through posts of a specific user, include from:username (the full username, including the instance)

If it doesn't work, have a look at this:

I think if we could get the media to stop calling government abuses and illegal legislation "tough measures", it would be significant progress.

Acting criminally or inhumanely is not "tough"; it's just criminal and inhumane.

"Each Facebook user is monitored by thousands of companies ... Using a panel of 709 volunteers who shared archives of their Facebook data, Consumer Reports found that a total of 186,892 companies sent data about them to the social network. Having cats really fucks with your sense of object permanence. For a long time my brain has accepted that if I'm alone in the house and I put something on the kitchen counter then it will still be there when I return. Cats are not compatible with this assumption.

listening to this re-run through my 2024 personal project lens of #SocialTech - we need to de-couple our human and legal rights from marriage and the nuclear family. Chosen and non traditional families, based in clear communication and personal autonomy, are a social technology for resilience, health, and happiness. We need to shift social and legal structures to honor them!

This work is also rooted in a reading of Naomi Klein’s latest work, in which she asks us to look in the mirror and ask why we’re failing on the left. When I look in that mirror I see imploding social movements and burned out people who need: a)relationship skills, including a praxis of individual and relational patterns for successful group work; and b)easy access to the actual social patterns and blueprints we can be campaigning on & implementing to get us where we want to go

Went to a tech meetup in Dublin yesterday and no one I spoke to had heard of the fediverse (or Mastodon, even). I’m talking about software engineers. This blows my mind.

(At least everyone I spoke with has heard of it now, though. And when people do hear about it – as with the – they do get it. And they’re excited about it.)

@mariyadelano My wife's grandad was a Ukrainian refugee post WW2. He couldn't return until 1990s, when he was keen for his kids & grandkids to see his home village (near Lviv). He and his new family, inc my wife to be, were treated v well by the Ukrainian side of the family. My wife's main memories are constant Vodka toasts, outside toilets with no running water, fiddle-playing at parties, and her grandad taking some Ukrainian soil home to the UK with him to be placed in his grave! (it was).

I have a mental illness and it affects my business.

My company is shaped by me and my moods. The way I network is shaped by the problems I struggle with. And the way I show up as a content creator and a marketer is affected by the mental illnesses that my brain suffers from.

If you don't mind taking 12 minutes out of your day, I would truly appreciate it if you could listen to my story.
