The last 10 years or so of tech:

2013: Blockchain! It's a like a database, but slower and worse!
2016: VR! It's like monitors, but slower and worse!
2021: NFTs! It's like pictures, but slower and worse!
2023: AI! It's like algorithms, but slower and worse!

My first via is now live!

I talked about , mental health, , and emotional resonance.

Sometimes, failure feels like the safest option. Our present might suck and our pain might be unpleasant, but it’s familiar. We know how much our reality hurts. But a better future? That’s strange, new, and uncertain.

And nothing is scarier than fear of the unknown.

I played a lot of great games last year, and I thought I’d share a few of my favourites in one big thread.

Few of these are new releases, but all of them are titles that I very much recommend.

Suggestion: Whenever someone tries the "Reasonable" game on you, demand they change the word to "effective."

"What are reasonable solutions to climate change?"

No, "What are effective solutions to climate change?"

"What are reasonable Covid precautions?"

No, "What are effective Covid precautions?"

We don't talk about "reasonable" ways to escape from a great white shark or avoid a gasoline tanker that has overturned.

Wow, Duolingo fired their translators to replace them by AI generated content. I thought they cared about language and communication! A lot of their courses are irreplaceable, the languages are not available in any other app and some real native people have made content for some of the endangered languages.

@lana@mstdn.science avatar

The funny thing is, if they truly believe this is a perfect fit for AI, it follows that duolingo believes it itself is obsolete: why would your users learn any language when they can instead use automated translation?

Massive study analyzes 23 million headlines from 47 news media outlets in the US from 2000-2019. They find that over this time period, headlines became more likely to denote anger, fear, disgust and sadness and less likely to be emotionally neutral. Headlines from right-leaning news media were consistently more negative than headlines from left-leaning outlets as well.

This is just my opinion, but.

I feel like, as with Fincher, people get so fixated on Wes Anderson’s tone and on the supposed “”coldness”” of his imagery—without ever really bothering to process how well that imagery can serve stories that are about some pretty profound humanity.

Which stories I find anything but cold.

🌐 On the Birth of a New Internet | @mariyadelano

「 The internet today reminds me of the Doomed Commercial Area in a brilliant RPG video game titled “Disco Elysium”. In that game, you play as a detective who is trying to solve a murder in a forgotten and poverty-ridden district of a fictional city called Revachol. And one of the zones that you can discover as you play is a literal basement filled with abandoned and failed businesses 」

“Accept the reality that AI will destroy creative careers” sounds an awful lot like “accept the reality that crypto and NFTs are the future of commerce”

In both cases we see:

  • Hype driven by companies and investors with vested interest in said technology
  • Grand predictions of the future and comparisons to disruptions like the internet
  • Obscure, complex tech that most people don’t use
  • Extreme resource consumption for tech to function
  • Fear and panic from media

@mariyadelano I would add "lack of understanding from the media reporting on it" to the list. That makes it easier to just create articles from PRs, instead of digging and trying to understand it

I was in a discussion today with @TechConnectify and @feditips about reply toxicity here, and I've tried to make all of that into a coherent post.

I want to go to with a version of this, but need to let it sit overnight and probably rewrite it. But I also think it's something anyone interested in non-corporate-controlled social media needs to think about, because a fair number of people go "influencers, fuck 'em" and that's... not how I think this needs to be understood. If you don't care about them, fine, but care about their followers who will follow them away.

Because like it or not, if you want to go against corporate-owned social media, you need these people too.

“If you want distributed social to be a thing, if you want not to be a hostage of the latest billionaire to buy out your platform and turn your beloved hellsite into a fascist disinformation fountain and propaganda machine, you have to care about large-account followers, because they have to want to be here too.”

@mariyadelano It's my opinion that these are valid needs that are not unique to them - that are wanted sometimes by all sorts of users - and that need to be considered.

They shouldn't be privileged over everyone else, I'm not saying they should be. But if they need tools - particularly if those tools are available and useful in general! - those should be considered as legitimate needs.

I don't think that's an unreasonable ask.
