Shout out to @nigelharpur for buying my two songs on Bandcamp yesterday! I was having a day full of frustration and self-doubt as I work on my latest track. Thank you so much for reminding me why I do this; you made me feel like a rock star.

But you're the real rock star!

Gif of Beyonce looking relaxed and happy on stage as she laughs and points at someone in the audience who is (probably) the person who made her smile.

I think we're on the same page. Were I a musician and you asked, I'd more than likely say yes. Were you wanting free content for a subscription fee service, not so much. With exceptions of course.

A weird example is if I were asked to contribute to the Chromecast screensavers. I might. Google doesn't actually profit from that and it is actual exposure. A lot more like a museum gallery than anything else, yanno?

Do you know librarians who have created Mastodon instances?

A librarian at my institution is interested in advocating for creating one. It might be helpful to read about other librarians' experiences doing this or the existence of some other cases managed by libraries.

olav,
@olav@theweird.space avatar

@andresmh
I dated a library assistant in HS so I have to ask what the instance will do, i.e., what's its scope? I mean, there's a very strong argument for the ALA having an instance that member libraries can join, but anything under the county/district level

"You shouldn't make your income reliant on a social media service, you should use online spaces you own"

nobody visits a website unless they see the link on social media or on Google first and nobody is gonna Google for something they don't know exists, not in a way your blog or website will show up in search results ahead of websites full of SEO gaming cruft

don't give me that "it's harder" shit, its not harder, it is absolutely completely and utterly IMPOSSIBLE unless you start out already famous. You might as well be saying "don't make your income reliant on social media; simply starve to death instead"

olav,
@olav@theweird.space avatar

@eniko
I'm sure I'll care more if the photo website ever goes online. But my recipe site, I decided it's just for.me and if anyone else likes it, fine. I'm not writing novellas, I'm not including an effluence of pictures, I'm certainly not allowing ads. All the things search engines hate, basically. I post links on SM if there's something new (and it's federated) which gets clicks which is nice.
But either way I'm not with the Cool Kids unless it's something esoteric.

How to use Mastodon:

Step 1: Sign up.

Step 2: Do regular social media stuff.

Journalists: Only those with advanced degrees in computer science should even attempt to navigate Mastodon, the frustrations of its complexities will drive the average user to a state of hysteria.

olav,

My experience has been there are museums for kids, and there museums for the louts that went home when the pub closed

Granted, my trip to London we stayed at the pub long after the locals were sent packing. Being a not-asshole American has its advantages.

State guard set up by DeSantis is being trained as personal militia, veterans say

California has a well regulated militia (see what I did there) that is similar to the national guard (and trains with them) in duties, etc but has never been politicized. Their ranks would quit too.

In California if you're driving over 100mph on the interstate (2 administrative points), you quickly get into reckless driving, which is 3 points and a criminal misdemeanor. But they'll probably add a few other infractions which in total means suspension of driving privileges for 12+ months
~ driving is a privilege here and controlled by the DMV separate from the court system, although they can move in parallel. DUI for example.
