I support @Gargron defaulting new users to mastodon.social to deal with the onboarding complaints for now, but I wish all these things had different names. The server software, the instance, the mobile app, his nonprofit to a lesser degree. And then we need more conversation about how that's all only part of the social web. #fediverse

if anybody here wants to try out owncast but is on the fence about actually doing it from the effort of setting up and paying for a server
from today until june 1st i'm willing to host an owncast instance for anybody at no cost
the only catch is just that this is just temporary, a trial offer to make it easy for people to give it a try basically, its open from now until june 2nd, after which everyone will be provided with the full backup to continue with on another host if desired
why? i'm doing this because i setup a server for myself to try owncast, but my internet isn't good enough to use it myself, however the server is fine and its not going to cost me anything to keep it running for the next month
so instead of letting the server go unused i figure i could use it to give others who are on the fence about it the opportunity to try owncast
you can either bring your own domain (which i recommend, because that will let you continue hosting with little effort)
or i can provide a subdomain (<name>.cast.tela.moe) just be aware that you can't change the domain after the fact, and i don't have the setup to allow you to keep the subdomain
i'm not putting up any strict rules on what you could stream, i'm not twitch or youtube i'm not going to bonk you for swearing too much, just no illegal content or hate content, and because the server would be shared no 24/7 streams

As I continue to become acclimated to #Fediverse I'm increasingly pleased with it. As a network engineer I see that the underlying structure fits the structure of the Internet as a whole. That's what makes it so strong and resilient, and why I believe it's here to stay along side email, the www and every other service that isn't controlled by a single body. Other services may have bling but Mastodon is the strong quiet type with all the wisdom it'll ever need to survive . 💪
Trying out @MonaApp on the #mac and one of the little details I like is that when you’re looking at the local and federated feeds, it refers to what are often referred to as “servers” or “accounts” by other #mastodon clients as “communities.”
This is subtle, but captures a key feature of the #fediverse - your server doesn’t have to be just the place where you access the network, it can also be a community that you are a part of.
Today marks the first #anniversary of my #Mastodon journey and in those 365 days it's become my main social media platform. I hardly use Twitter anymore besides keeping up with those creators that I couldn't convince to switch. Tumblr was already pretty much dead last year and still is. So 90% of my social media time goes to Mastodon and I don't think I've been more active on a social network than I have here.
I like the sense of #community. I don't think it's complicated. I really enjoy it. 😊
#Spoutible states that an upcoming feature will be “Cross-platform posting”, although it’s not quite clear what that means. Since the CEO constantly posts to Twitter, I assume that will be the first platform that gets integrated. But will it include #activitypub or #mastodon cross posting?
I really don't mind if folks who want New Twttr move on. The #Fediverse is always going to be something other than a 1:1 Facebook or bird site alternative.
I was just reading the discussion under #Mastodon's announcement about adding #quotes, and I found this observation interesting, so I'd like to quote @Valent's posts (since we already have this functionality in #Calckey 🥴).
I don't know if "quote posts" means something for Mastodon's terminology in the future, but one thing we did, a few months ago, as a fork of #Misskey, was to change our terminology from #Notes and #Renotes to #Posts and #Boosts. We also call our equivalent to a #Favorite a #Like (although we also have other emoji reactions). The idea behind this is that we want to promote the use of a more unified language across the #Fediverse, so that we can make communication between users on different #fedi platforms smoother. I think it's very important to try and co-exist in harmony in this unique and exciting federated universe, instead of every platform pushing their own "trademark" terminology, which mostly makes the experience more confusing for users discovering the #Fediverse. So I think that any change towards more common and self-explanatory terms on basic features would be a step in the right direction! :blobbonethumbsup:
Watching the social media landscape news the past couple weeks has me in a dual mindset of despondancy and determination about the fediverse. The despondancy comes from the reinforced realism that usage decisions around these systems will forever be driven by FOMO and frictionless entry and our systems aren't really ready for either yet. I have mixed feelings about Mastodon changing onboarding to make it all "mastodon.social" by default (where 90% of the users will go now) but getting rid of the biggest analysis paralysis part of getting people here is vitally important. To be frank, normal people don't give a damn about decentralization or data control they care about FOMO and "it just works". Friendica, my network, has even further to go on that front than Mastodon even. The determination comes from the knowledge that we did get a glimpse of people being able to feel FOMO about the fediverse thanks to Musk's Twitter enshitification. As people, including me, continue to refine the fediverse we could be in a position where more of them feel it enough to stay on the next wave. The fact is I'm not working on these systems to "conquering the world". I'm working on these systems because I enjoy using them on a daily basis and I want to improve that experience for myself and others. I hope that as we improve more will come into the fold and we could eventually hit a critical mass to be a real fraction of the social media space. #Bluesky is getting a lot of positive shine, and even in its nascent state, performs better in certain areas, but in no way does it feel like the product of community.
Bluesky is fun now, but what happens when the messy reality of moderation, control, and capital enters the picture? Mastodon relies on community-run instances (I donate to mine), and the willingness and desire of people to put the work in.
When that time comes for Bluesky, who will step up to take responsibility? Will it find a similar federated governance model, or will it just become a Twitter clone?
