Just published a blog post about how to replace your fiber optic cables on your underwater photography rig on the cheap! Underwater photography is expensive, so let's save a few bucks where we can. I have been shooting with these cables for awhile and they are very reliable.
One “fun” realization that USB-A chargers deliver 5V - period. USB-C doesn't do that blindly since it needs to know what power to deliver. So… the same cable plugged into a A to C adaptor can work fine, but do nothing when plugged into the same device from a Type-C charger 🤯
The FNB58 also shows capability of batteries, compares cables & even shows a tiny oscilloscope trace of voltage, current & data lines.
This is a very good piece on how the invisible seafaring industry that is keeping the internet afloat, bit at the same time, cable ships are breaking down and need to be replaced instead of repairing. Not a good sign.
Despite what many people think, most of the world's internet traffic goes through undersea cables, not satellites. A little-known industry exists to lay new cables and, more importantly, fix existing cables when they break. This story introduces the people and the aging ships that keep the internet from collapsing.

Interesting. Using one side for Live and the other for Neutral and keeping the two middle conductors unconnected to increase insulation still gives a clear 3kW (UK max safe load). I might have to try that just for a laugh.

Do you use anything specific for #cablemanagement? I discovered #cablebug(s) years ago and find them quite easy and convenient to use. Also in the pictures: nylon #cablehose(s) that I use throughout the studio.
Somehow #cables are rarely perfectly organized (even when custom made) or laid out, but I keep trying anyway. 🫣😝 #compulsion
I’m knitting a sweater with cables for my husband. It takes a lot of time 😅 but I like working on it. The real color, Burgungy, is darker than on the picture.
Je tricote un pull avec des torsades à mon mari. Ça va être très long, mais j’aime bien y travailler. Le fil est bordeaux, plus foncé que sur la photo.
All USB-C cables are equal. But some, as the saying goes, are more equal than others.
This little gadget from Plugable is a fantastic bit of kit. Plug your USB-C power supply into one end of the gadget, plug the gadget in to your laptop, phone, or any other USB-C device. Watch the screen to see how much power is flowing.
There's no Bluetooth or WiFi to get the results out. There's no flash storage to record anything. There's no graphs. It shows you volts, amps, watts, and direction of power. That's all I need it for, and that's all it does.
As you can see, the screen reacts quickly. So you can get a good idea of what power load your various apps have.
This is great. My work Windows laptop was complaining that it wasn't receiving enough power from my USB-C docking station and, with this, I was able to see that it was getting about 40W.
I was able to test some USB-C cables to see how much power they could support.
Even better, this doesn't interfere with normal USB-C functions. It happily passed through video, audio, peripherals, etc.
It's about £20 - £35 online depending on whether The Algorithm favours you or not. You can find cheaper ones - but they tend not to go up to 240W.
This is an indispensable gadget - especially if you have dozens of cables of uncertain provenance. It'll tell you just how much they're capable of delivering.
Now I just need to find a USB-C plug which can actually deliver 240W via PD!
@blog Do they have one that does the same for the data capabilities of the cable? Because most USBC power cables, including the high power fancy ones with braded sleeves and power displays and ID chips, are good for no more than USB2 480MB/s data transfer rate.
I just went through and threw out a bunch of USBC cables including pretty expensive ones from Apple that showed up with USB2 connections when I used them to connect a USB3 device.
The #Swedish government has said that damage to one of its underwater #cables was caused by what it called "external force." The cable carried telecommunications between #Sweden and #Estonia, and appears to have been partially broken two weeks ago - the same day that an underwater gas pipeline went out of action between Estonia and #Finland. Investigators are looking at the activities of a #Chinese ship which was in the area at the time, though #Russia has also been accused of playing a role.
I've got no clue who actually started doing that in my household, but using old toilet paper rolls to prevent cables from entangling inside the storage boxes is actually a brilliant idea! 💡#organisation#storage#cables#recycling
Due to Apple's #iPhone#connector change, we have decided to review our collection of #wires, small peripherals, and other items surrounding our #electronics.
Much pictured here is being organized. We determined that we have enough:
FYI The Internet country code top-level domain .io is nominally assigned to the British Indian Ocean Territory.
The only inhabitants are British and United States military personnel, and associated contractors, who collectively number around 3,000. The forced removal of Chagossians from the Chagos Archipelago occurred between 1968 and 1973. The Chagossians, then numbering about 2,000 people, were expelled by the UK government to Mauritius and Seychelles in order to construct the military base.
@jwildeboer also the #ICC ordered #UK to return the island to it's inhabitants and according to #Wikileaks-published #cables the UK gov tried to prevent that by making the Chagos Islands a nature reserve.
