About half an hour left in my #poll about the order of good vs bad news in the minithread I intend to do what I think are the single best and single worst aspects of the #Fediverse communities.
@fediversenews interested in views on whether it's OK that there's no opt-out for tweets being mirrored to the #fediverse by #birdmakeup. Seems to me that users on a platform supposedly concerned with ownership of data should be able to get that a twitter user's request not to pull their tweets over to #activitypub should be taken seriously
especially since fediverse-wide post-deletion options are currently very sketchy!
Whenever I see negative feedback about the #fediverse, it is about:
being lonely
lacks discoverability
reach is poor
support for this and that is lacking
not welcoming for other people
All of the above, it has to do with what I've described in this quoted post, #ObservableFediverse. Meaning, one was only exposed to a very small part of the fediverse from that person's vantage point.
Let's take for example the #5 item. Is the fediverse not welcoming for certain groups of people, the minorities, the marginalised, those with disabilities, and often discriminated based on origin?
Have you seen those? More likely not. Why? “Observable fediverse.”
In #astronomy, an #ObservableUniverse is the part of the huge universe that we can observe from Earth. It is how far our current technology can reach.
It is the same in “observable fediverse”. What you see, what you are interacting with, is only what you currently have access to. Your “observable fediverse” relies on these factors:
The users in your instance.
The remote users and other servers your instance is aware of.
The people you are following (which include groups).
That is your “observable fediverse”.
Since you are not following a user who is following a Filipino, or is a member of an autistic group, there is very little chance you will see content from Filipinos and autistics.
Another reason of disappointment is misunderstanding what the “fediverse/global timeline” is. Here's the thing, it is just the public chatter.
Think of it as visiting a crowded public park. You'll hear all kinds of discussions. There are those that are offensive, and those that are not.
The “federated/global timeline” is also not the entirety of the fediverse. It is only what your instance/server is aware of. If what you most see are unwelcoming content, then don't look at it, or move to a new instance, or ask around. I'm sure your own instance will help you find like-minded individuals and groups.
That's your observable fediverse. The fediverse is not unwelcoming. My guesstimate is, no one account, no one server, have seen more than 1% of the entire fediverse. Just like how we haven't seen more than 1% of the entire universe.
I see posts from Mastodon boosted here on Calckey and I wonder how they did that? 🤔
Oh well, I will find out somewhen, no hurry. I try to look through all that tech talk and figure out what it could possibly mean in practical terms. I often have no idea but I find it fascinating 😊 #tech#Calckey#Mastodon#Fediverse
@spiralmind Thank you and yes, I understand that´s the federation part. What I don´t understand or better haven´t figured out is how that works in practice. I mean, it doesn´t look like a copy-paste link or something. Or maybe I´m just misinterpreting what I see?
@Catonauts Yeah, the federation lets you follow/boost people from other instances. You can use the Search box to search for users by their username, or paste the address to, for example, a #Mastodon post, and you'll get the option to boost it from #Calckey.
That part of the #Fediverse is still a bit cumbersome, but no doubt there will be improvements to the process.
@spiralmind Aha! Thank you, I thought there might be a magic trick kind of 😉
I don´t mind the cumbersome part. If I wanted easy and convenient access, I could have stuck with Twitter or any other go to any other big-tech-ruled Social Media out there. Also, from what I have observed, great improvements have been made and some are on their way. #tech#Calckey#Mastodon#Fediverse
Thanks to @mmasnick for the clear and cogent explanations in this article about what's happening with various decentralized protocols llike #ActivityPub, #nostr as well as #Bluesky. I think clearing up some of the concerns and the fudd was needed. I wish people would wait a little and listen.

"The fediverse is like social-media unionization for journalists
Dear journalists, this is the best opportunity you'll ever get to actively fight back against the attention-hoarding platforms that have been grossly undermining the power of the Fourth Estate for the past two decades.
A true revolution for independent media is available to you as a mere three-step process..."
We are absolutely thrilled and grateful for your generous support, which will help us continue to improve and grow our community. Your contribution means the world to us, and we can't express how much we appreciate your kindness and generosity.
Thank you so much for your amazing support and for being part of our community. We couldn't do this without you, and we look forward to continuing to provide a great experience for all our users with your help.
So I just tried the alias and move account thing from my first mastodon account over to this one.
Once I identified the right buttons to push (software forks with different ui issues), it was pretty simple. This is a very cool feature. It does require higher user knowledge but it provides some options I have seen from other platforms. #fediverse#calckey#mastodonsocial
City development, squatting, old Lisbon stories, the history of the #OpenSource#fediverse (identi.ca joindiaspora pump.io), moderation by the user and the role of the moderators, #OpenStandards, communities and the rise of the fediverse, the corporate adoption, the role of governments, #ActivityPub protocol, extensions and new uses, @forgejo and fediverse integration.
#BlockTheMetaHordes because, as we all know, "...Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile."
What is sensible, on the other hand, is making it ever more easy to join the #Fediverse by selecting the best fitting platform technologies and instances and finding like-minded people and subjects of interest.
So, I think I've dug as deeply into the #hachyderm drama as I need to, and settled on some conclusions.
Most basically, the best insights came from seeing conversations on another platform: discord.
Admins from both sides were talking. And as it's a chat platform, the engagement and conversation was clearly more direct, free, expressive and clarifying.
If the fediverse wants to be the new internet, seriously, it needs to growup and move on from just microblogging.
