😢 Sad story: For a long time pre-2022 I'd have happily paid $8 a month for a well-moderated, ad-free, time-ordered timeline. They never gave me that choice

😊 Happy ending: That's exactly what the has enabled for me. I make $8 donations to my instance host to help keep it sustainable

I disagree with those who say “Let’s focus on spreading awareness for Mastodon—not the Fediverse” for three reasons:

  1. Some people hate Mastodon. If they don’t like Mastodon, they should know about options to their liking.

  2. Some people are looking for alternatives to Facebook, YouTube, Instagram—and Mastodon is not the answer for them.

  3. What about developers looking to build novel and new social media? They should know what ActivityPub does.

kidehen,

“Let’s focus on spreading awareness for Mastodon—not the Fediverse” is the headline of a tragic movie that many of us have seen before.

@Mastodon is a popular platform, that offers a nice alternative via its support for (re server-server protocol) and .

kidehen,

@atomicpoet @ivory Huh? That's news. Basically, the tragic aspect of same old movie about silos and their adverse effects on an are already taking shape -- unfortunately.

What's needed is an constructed from loose-coupling enabled by open standards. Anything less is just a predictable tragic movie reboot.

Just in the last 24-48 hours, I have tried my best to bring up instances of GoToSocial, MissKey, CalcKey and Pleroma just to see what would work for a single user Fediverse instance. Guess who is winning right now?

I got a lot of heat for this two months ago, but I don't remember someone convincing me, that I am wrong. On the contrary – I think, the basic premise still holds. So I'm curious what the rest of and the thinks, because it's applicable to both:

What I was arguing for was, that Mastodon (all the Fediverse, really) needs to cost something for users, to work in the long term.

Let me explain..

Lot's of media people whining about Twitter removing the "blue check mark" from government accounts. It's hilarious because actually it's not Musk who's to blame. It's the governments that ended up depending on "free" accounts provided by private companies. Governments should operate their own internet infrastructures.

So now it's about time to stop whining and create a presence in the , for now and for ever.

Note: The fediverse will work even on Mars 😀

Celebrities and big brands may never flock to Mastodon. It's just the nature of the platform to target a small community rather than a large audience, and for those hoping to do that, they'll pick centralized systems every time. But for me, that's just fine. I like it here. Maybe some other friends would like it here too, that's what @spreadmastodon is about. Not having your social media owned by a corporation is a great feeling. Let's make it more common.

ernest,

And I think they recognize that the the fediverse movement & community would turn on them if they cannibalize the existing network instead of adding to it as a friendly & compatible node.
