I was thinking earlier that it would be pretty cool to have an #ActivityPub-powered app that uses something like the old #WordPress#PostFormats feature that, in turn, supports post formats that other #Fediverse services use.
For example, the app can post regular posts like this one, structured link posts that work with services like #Lemmy, galleries through @pixelfed and videos through #Peertube.
Unless #ActivityPub automatically reformats posts based on what they contain when a user of services like these receives them in their feeds? I'm not sure how this works under the metaphorical hood. 🤔
Based on the amount of spam signups on https://pixelfed.social, I wouldn't be surprised if spam accounts correlate to other platforms recent user influx as well.
I'm not saying all growth is spam, but they are significant enough on my :pixelfed: instance to be noticable.
Luckily, 90% of spam accounts on Pixelfed are caught and hidden before any user sees them thanks to our Autospam system. #spam#fediverse
More random thoughts: how would running a #Fediverse instance scale if I run it off my home lab?
Mostly wondering about the network traffic side of things, I don't know how the federation works and if I'll end up having every instance on the internet talking to me eventually.
Need to sit down and actually read through the #ActivityPub spec some time.
I'm feeling that people have given up trying to stop an appalling UK Government from taking away all the good things we had embraced , A morally defunct corrupt set of people running the country into the ground in every way. I so want the #Tories Out and that's just for a start. #Politics#GTTO#Mastodon#Fediverse
So, I think I've dug as deeply into the #hachyderm drama as I need to, and settled on some conclusions.
Most basically, the best insights came from seeing conversations on another platform: discord.
Admins from both sides were talking. And as it's a chat platform, the engagement and conversation was clearly more direct, free, expressive and clarifying.
If the fediverse wants to be the new internet, seriously, it needs to growup and move on from just microblogging.
Not only was the drama caused by bad conflict-resolution, it's digestion by the #fediverse is bad governance.
It's not clear to me that any broad lessons will be synthesised + preserved for the ecosystem. This thread is a very poor substitute for such a thing (I don't know what I'm talking about and am 1 person). And I shouldn't have to dig as much as I did.
I honestly don't feel like decentralisation as a system is being taken care of.
This is noise - the #Fediverse is over 40 codebases for this to be signal you would likely have to be talking about #mastodon and even then it's still kinda noise.
#mainstreaming is bringing a "signal-to-noise" issue to the #openweb this is not a big problem, but it is something we need to mediate.
It has been over 6 months of my own #Mastodon server. People can bash it not "future proof" all they want, but #Fediverse is for life. :hamsterbreakdance:
@davew Given how the #fediverse works, we're already seeing a wide range of quite varied apps all connecting together. I believe that is technically possible with BlueSky (yes?) buit it appears to be far far behind what is happening with ActivityPub (with apparently less thought to moderation)
My reason for staying is counting on this explosion.
The most revealing aspect of the #hachyderm#fediblock drama has been the truly feudal nature of the fediverse / feudalverse.
A world of conflict was occurring between admins/feudal lords mostly unknown to instance users/subjects … until defederations and admin resignations occur … at which point the users have to blindly work out what’s happened and how it affects them and which instances they’re now blind to.
Just like monarchs declaring war against each other. @fediversenews
@leviramsey@maegul@fediversenews@nova As sole proprietor of my own instance in the #Fediverse - I don’t supply content to centralized for profit sites. Social media corporations reap the economics. Users supply creativity and content like serfs did agricultural labor - just for a place to inhabit. That’s feudalism. It’s a slow process but I hope others adopt this awareness. #mastodon may not yet be mature. Remember the #birdsite in 2008?
@micahflee
This is good news.
For the same reasons 4chan has found its users, Facebook has grandpa, and we have #fediverse/#mastodon, they have have Bsky and Nostr. Eventually, we all find the community we deserve. Its more fun to belong.

Maybe I could be wrong...
