I was thinking earlier that it would be pretty cool to have an -powered app that uses something like the old feature that, in turn, supports post formats that other services use.

For example, the app can post regular posts like this one, structured link posts that work with services like , galleries through @pixelfed and videos through .

Unless automatically reformats posts based on what they contain when a user of services like these receives them in their feeds? I'm not sure how this works under the metaphorical hood. 🤔

If anybody is curious about Bookwyrm - here's what a federated book review looks like!

Note that, in Mastodon, only the review title and URL are pulled across - but here in Calckey, the entire text of the review comes too.

Based on the amount of spam signups on https://pixelfed.social, I wouldn't be surprised if spam accounts correlate to other platforms recent user influx as well.

I'm not saying all growth is spam, but they are significant enough on my :pixelfed: instance to be noticable.

Luckily, 90% of spam accounts on Pixelfed are caught and hidden before any user sees them thanks to our Autospam system.

More random thoughts: how would running a instance scale if I run it off my home lab?

Mostly wondering about the network traffic side of things, I don't know how the federation works and if I'll end up having every instance on the internet talking to me eventually.

Need to sit down and actually read through the spec some time.

What I collected from the conflict so far:

Hachyderm forbids all Fundraising in posts because of crypto spam. That hurts marginalized people like trans folk that need mutual aid.

The issue escalated because other instance users suggested to block hachyderm on the fediblock hashtag.

Multiple hachyderm admins resigned, including the founder @nova exiting the fediverse completely.

So, I think I've dug as deeply into the drama as I need to, and settled on some conclusions.

  • Most basically, the best insights came from seeing conversations on another platform: discord.

Admins from both sides were talking. And as it's a chat platform, the engagement and conversation was clearly more direct, free, expressive and clarifying.

If the fediverse wants to be the new internet, seriously, it needs to growup and move on from just microblogging.

  • Not only was the drama caused by bad conflict-resolution, it's digestion by the is bad governance.

It's not clear to me that any broad lessons will be synthesised + preserved for the ecosystem. This thread is a very poor substitute for such a thing (I don't know what I'm talking about and am 1 person). And I shouldn't have to dig as much as I did.

I honestly don't feel like decentralisation as a system is being taken care of.

Best to all involved.

This is noise - the is over 40 codebases for this to be signal you would likely have to be talking about and even then it's still kinda noise.

is bringing a "signal-to-noise" issue to the this is not a big problem, but it is something we need to mediate.

I'm staying away from BlueSky unless it becomes inevitable, and I hope that never happens.

The idea of hooking up with another Jack Dorsey sell-out at this point seems the most ridiculous idea ever.

He made his billions, he sold out to Musk, and now he wants another shot. No. Not unless we have no choice.

scottjenson,
@scottjenson@social.coop avatar

@davew Given how the works, we're already seeing a wide range of quite varied apps all connecting together. I believe that is technically possible with BlueSky (yes?) buit it appears to be far far behind what is happening with ActivityPub (with apparently less thought to moderation)

My reason for staying is counting on this explosion.

The most revealing aspect of the drama has been the truly feudal nature of the fediverse / feudalverse.

A world of conflict was occurring between admins/feudal lords mostly unknown to instance users/subjects … until defederations and admin resignations occur … at which point the users have to blindly work out what’s happened and how it affects them and which instances they’re now blind to.

Just like monarchs declaring war against each other.
@fediversenews

dumbo,

@leviramsey @maegul @fediversenews @nova As sole proprietor of my own instance in the - I don’t supply content to centralized for profit sites. Social media corporations reap the economics. Users supply creativity and content like serfs did agricultural labor - just for a place to inhabit. That’s feudalism. It’s a slow process but I hope others adopt this awareness. may not yet be mature. Remember the in 2008?

maegul,
@maegul@hachyderm.io avatar

@dumbo @leviramsey @fediversenews @nova

The ideal fediverse?

  • Everyone is on single-user instances with much personal control (hosted by one of many services).
  • People congregate in various communities, which is where the real moderating and community management happens.
  • A variety of software and platform options exist for both the user-instances and community platforms.

Is the flaw of the / that it conflates hosting and community services and so underperforms at both?

There's no Mastodon slump.

Sign-ups continue to increase -- albeit, not at the same rate as in November -- November was a spike.

While Monthly Average Users (MAUs) decreased since November, it's increased again this month (according to @Gargron).

But what's more interesting is that Half Year Average Users (HYAUs) is at a peak.

And we're very close to breaking 1 billion posts per month!

See chart.
