This sketch is a fabulous example of Da Vinci’s ability to capture expressions: just look this cat's clear disdain as it squirms within an overly eager embrace!

Israeli Damage to Archives, Libraries, and Museums in Gaza, October 2023–January 2024

The destruction of cultural heritage in Gaza impoverishes the collective identity of the Palestinian people, irrevocably denies them their history, and violates their sovereignty.
Moreover, archivists and librarians have been repeatedly displaced, injured, or killed.

An employee of the Pinakothek der Moderne, one of Germany's largest and most prestigious contemporary art galleries, has been fired for hanging one of his own paintings in the space. The 51-year-old technical services team member also has to worry about a police investigation, as Munich authorities are investigating him for damage to property because of the two holes he drilled in a wall. Euronews has the full story.

Some folks have been asking about the font used for the "Director's Choice" interpretive panels. It is based on the hand-engraved script on New Zealand's Oldest Telescope, made in 1736 by Scottish Telescope maker James Short which is featured in the exhibition. I'm pretty stoked at the creativity of designer, Harry Pickernell. Incidentally handwriting is a feature of the exhibition which also features some labels handwritten by the Museum's 2nd Director Thomas Jeffery Parker.

The new stairwell exhibition @tuhuraotagomuseum is being installed over the next few days. It is called "Director's Choice, wonderful things from the Collection". I was so lucky to be able to select some incredibly beautiful things like these tiny animal figures, which come from Mesopotamia and are thousands of years old. Human creativity is inspirational!

So... in other news, To "celebrate" ten years at the helm, I am personally curating the next stairwell exhibition at Tūhura Otago Museum. I've had access to the whole collection and been allowed to choose some special things which appeal to me. I'm giving a talk about the choices on 7th April... https://otagomuseum.nz/whats-on/directors-choice-exhibition-talk
