Crimson-speckled flunkey (Utetheisa pulchella) crimson-speckled footman, or crimson-speckled moth. Birds don’t like them as the caterpillars accumulate a large amount of alkaloids, toxic & unpalatable to birds. Which probably accounts for the colors, a warning sign.

Rare deep-sea squid filmed at depth

“The squid, which was about 75cm long, descended on our camera assuming it was prey, and tried to startle it with is huge bioluminescent headlights,” Associate Professor Stewart said.

Sorry to learn of the passing of Prof. Alan Waggoner here in #Pittsburgh a couple of days ago.
He was an all round terrific person, besides being a great scientist. He developed the #Fluorescent Cyanine dyes (Cy3 Cy5 and others in the series) that had a significant impact on biological #imaging , in the 1990s
