I seem to once again be in a situation where I have to tell the harsh truth that most potential users of the #fediverse will find the federated system a hindrance, not a boon. Plus of course, again, 95% of potential users have never nor will never care about open source.
I was yesterday checking a profile at #Fosstodon, and was surprised the description of the instance was all #Mastodon. Nowhere was there mention of federation, #Fediverse, or #ActivityPub.
You can't drag some people away from #Twitter and #Facebook, but it's baffling how people will cling to what they know by denying the value and engagement to be found on the #fediverse.
All this buzz around #decentralized federated social media in the hands of motivated people trying to build healthy sustainable communities is filling me with the kind of excitement I felt when I discovered forums and IRC.
@kerfuffle Interested to see how the EU's DMA will impact the ecosystem in the future. On the other hand, let's hope they don't burn down their efforts with Chat Control.
As the old-timers like to remind us, the #Fediverse is bigger than #Mastodon . 😉
So I'd like to get some #FediTips and #recommendations : What kinds of accounts do you recommend for following that are on instances that aren't using Mastodon for their server? The more divergent from the normal "Mastodon experience", the better!
@J12t Watching them flood into lemmy right now it seems like it's working quite well on its own. I just read probably a hundred posts of people saying basically "I just signed up and I love this place already"
There's now a #FediPact tag, and a website collecting signatories thanks to @vantablack https://fedipact.online/
You can also follow the progress via the dedicated FediDB tracker https://fedidb.org/current-events/anti-meta-fedi-pact
set up by @dansup
(a thankless work, apparently, given how many of you are harassing him. JFC, people, if you are unable to debate and criticize without resorting to harassment and insults, maybe consider that Twitter is better suited for you than the Fediverse?)
One thing I've noticed with people in the “wait and see” camp is that none of them seems to be able to answer this very simple question:
Meta is a known bad actor. It has a track record of abysmal privacy policies, catastrophic moderation (Myanmar genocide docet) and successful open protocol busting (XMPP). What information do you have that would even suggest this isn't what they're bringing to the Fediverse, to justify a “wait and see” attitude?
Reddit's strategy of antagonizing app writters, moderators, and millions of redditors is good news for reddit alternatives like KBin and Lemmy. And not just them! The fediverse has always grown in waves and we're at the start of one.
Previous waves have led to innovation but also major challenges and limited growth. It's worth looking at what tactics worked well in the past, to use them again or adapt them and build on them. It's also valuable to look at what went wrong or didn't work out as well in the past, to see if there are ways to do better.
Here's the current table of contents:
I'm flashing!!!!!
But first, some background
Don't tell people "it's easy"
Improve the "getting-started experience"
Keep scalability and sustainability in mind
Prioritize accessibility
Get ready for trolls, hate speech, harassment, spam, porn, and disinformation
Invest in moderation tools
Values matter
This is a great opportunity – and it won't be the last great opportunity
I came here after reading a migration guide at r/redditalternatives, i just wanna say, describing the technical aspects of kbin and ActivityPub doesnt really help navigate the the kbin UI.
It's not really necesary to explain how kbin, lenny and mastodon can interact with eachother when the average brand new user doesn't know how to interact and is overwhelmed by kbin's webpage alone. Currently these platforms are being intoduced from the developer's POV and it's like being thrown to the deep end of the pool.
Anyways back to reading any and all posts i can find to figure this site out lmao
About Meta on the Fediverse :facebook::geodesic::
I have a lot of concerns about Meta coming soon to the Fediverse.
I fear what this means for the exchange of information that will inevitably happen between us and them.
What it means legally,
what it means technically,
but mostly what it means ethically.
I also fear for the culture we have developed here.
I have deleted my Facebook account 5 years ago and never regretted it. I do not have any other accounts with Meta. For many reasons, I intend to stay away from this unethical corporation as much as I can.
I do not know what my instance intends to do about this, but personally I will block entirely any instance(s) controlled by Meta. I might also lock my account if necessary. This isn't about the people on there, this is very much about the practices of the corporation that controls it.
I sincerely hope their presence will not break the Fediverse :geodesic:
I hope we will stay strong and fight together for the better world we have started to create ✊:heart_cyber:
But I can’t help seeing the arrival of Goliath as a threat to the new world we have built...
If you find yourself disagreeing with someone on the #fediverse who you don't follow maybe consider just muting them and keeping your fucking mouth shut?
I say this as a recovering replyguy myself. This behavior was normal on Twitter, but you have got to cut it out now!
If you're following someone and you don't want to unfollow them just because they are sometimes wrong on the Internet, then tell them you disagree, but otherwise just STFU.
