Hallo #cccamp23 ! Smol reminder that in a little over an hour, @aura and myself are organising a #martialarts get together.
Meeting is 15:30 next to the Eventphone tent.
Come if you want to learn, share, have a bit of a workout (bring water!! #drinkmorewater) or just be a curious observer. We will find a shady spot and take it from there.
I just watched this @whn Safe Business Spotlight on a karate dojo and.. I knew it could be done! They have great mitigations AND it's caused an increase in business. This is the way! https://youtu.be/8FmPqEPa2QI?si=Fj3SXRPRlRcAuWRe
On forthcoming film Athletes of War and the IOC decision to let complicit Russian athletes compete in Paris this year.
“Our conditions are different from those of the Russian athletes. We have missiles flying over our heads,” says wrestler and Olympic medalist Iryna Koliadenko. “We may not wake up.”
I was on nerdculture.de since late October last year in whatever wave of Space Karen migration that was. I moved from the bird site, which I used professionally for 10 years, so I kept my Twitter handle. Now that I've "retired" from academia, looking to have a much less uptight experience on social media.
Mostly here for pretty pictures, memes, non-sequiturs, and hot-takes.
Approval of follows is on because of my profession :thisisfine:
We have an exciting new #karate master hopping into the scene: The Karateka #Frog! 🐸🥋 Get ready for some ribbit-ting action and fierce yet adorable #martialarts moves!
And as the Karateka Frog practices its katas, it belts out a unique croak-sonata that echoes through the dojo. It's like a chorus of "ribbit" in perfect harmony!
That's un-frog-gettable! 🏆🐸
Excuse me... it's summer time after all 😅
Have a nice and hot summer 👋
#SeanHannity's solution to mass #gunviolence is #karate and more #guns. The man seriously went on camera and said he's not worried about mass #shooters because he does #MMA#training. Does anyone really believe that Sean is doing hardcore #ninja training when he's not lying to the world on #FoxNews? And does anyone really believe that he's such a proficient #martialartist that he'd be able to stop a rifle round to the face if confronted by a mass shooter?
Okay, #karate friends, question for y'all. I have anxiety and today it is very very bad. Like I plan on still going to karate tonight and I went last night even though it was bad. Karate honestly helps. But, I'd also be testing for a tip on my belt tonight. I get quite nervous about testing. Should I tell my sensei that my anxiety is really bad and I'd rather not test this month? I would like to think he would understand. I think I'd be willing to try, but I don't think it would be good for me.
Man, bone on bone incidents at #karate appear to be my life lately. For about 20 mins at the start of each of our karate classes we do light #sparring where you wear foot and hand guards and throw soft contact punches, backfists and kicks. Four people now have tried kicking me only for me to do the simple block for it which is just to raise your knee to catch the kick(aka leg-check). Inevitably their knee or shin hits mine because they’ve got their range wrong and they collapse in pain or wince and limp for a bit. My shins are busted up because of years of this and I don’t really feel much pain anymore. BUT all-new tonight, someone tried a kick as I had my hands up and we clashed my-elbow to his-kneecap. FARK. It was close enough to the funny bone that my arm was half-tingling, and the elbow is STILL sore. If it had hit my FB full on it wouldn’t have been good at all. The poor kid took it like a champ. Wondering now, do I need elbow pads as well? 😖
The kids, husband, & I have been taking #karate classes at our local rec center for a few years. Our dojo is part of Goju‐Ryu Canada. The kids have their first belt levels but husband & I have been doing it casually & haven't tested. Well we decided to go for it & will be taking the test next month. 😬
It's tough because we are shown the katas a couple times in class then are expected to practice at home without any reference. So of course I went hunting on Youtube...
And it turns out that there are variations on the katas despite the name being the same. So it took concerted hunting to find videos that <kind of> match the #kata the way our dojo does it. Then I've been transcribing the steps into text. 😵💫 It's hard to know if I'm getting it right.... but I turned my efforts into a blog post in case any other local people are looking for the same resources.
Anyway.. I've been memorizing the numbers 1-10 in #japanese and practising. Totally nervous! 😁 #karate
Kids, husband & I are going for our #karate belt testing this afternoon!
Youngest is aiming for orange belt & the other two are aiming for their blue. Husband & I are currently unranked although we have been in class for two years so... it will be nice to see how our sensei ranks us.
