Here’s a 2.5 yo post about an 800 lb gorilla in the Matrix idea. I’ve heard people brush it off, but their needs were often niche, fanciful, or delusional. I need some engineers to help me separate the facts, legends, myths, and bullshit of a large scale federated matrix chat network. In our experience, just enabling presence can bring a Synapse server to its knees, if even if just 1 user follows a BIG room. What if many folks follow MANY big … 1/2

Tämä viimepäivien leikkiminen Fediversen ja Matrixin kanssa on muistuttanut minua siitä, että nämä palvelut ovat vielä melko kaukana keskivertokuluttajasta.
Mieleen tulee se kun 90-luvulla halusit käyttää sähköpostia ja sinun piti löytää sähköpostisovellus, osata asentaa se ja sen jälkeen konfiguroida se toimintaan. Se taas vaati sitä, että tiedät SMTP-palvelimen ja ymmärrät POP3- ja IMAP-protokollan erot. Eikä tietysti pidä unohtaa sitä, että ennen tätä sinulla oli oltava modeemi konfiguroituna...
Sitten tulee Yahoo, Microsoft ja Google ja sähköpostin käyttäminen onnistuu tunnuksen ja salasanan valinnalla. Ei latailua, ei konfigurointia eikä vaatimusta tekniselle ymmärtämiselle ja bonuksena niitä pystyi käyttämään kaikkialta. Ei ole mikään ihme, että niin moni siirtyi Hotmailin ja Gmailin käyttäjiksi. Ne on tehty tavallisille ihmisille. Ne ratkaisevat ongelman ilman teknistä kuormaa.
Fediverseä ja Matrixia vaivaa hieman sama ongelma. Ne ovat tarpeettoman teknisiä härveleitä ja niitä myös markkinoidaan sellaisena. Kun olen jutellut näistä ihmisten kanssa, niin palveluiden hajautus painaa heidän vaakakupissaan yhtä paljon kuin sähköpostipalvelinten hajautus - eli ei yhtään.
Koin hieman samaa kun koitin puhua ihmisiä Signaliin. End-to-end -salaus on ratkaisu ongelmaan jota heillä ei ole. Miksi he vaihtaisivat helpon ja tutun WhatsAppin johonkin, joka on sama asia mutta vaan teknisempi?
En tiedä mikä olisi hyvä tapa saada näistä palveluista suositumpia, mutta jotenkin tämä tekninen näpertely ei tunnu ihan oikealta. Kun katsoo ihmisten esittelyjä Mastodonissa niin tulee fiilis, että 90 % käyttäjistä on ohjelmoijia tai vähintään sellaisen puolisoita 😄
Näiden palvelujen tuomat edut ovat vähän kuin terveellisesti syöminen ja liikunta. Moni ihminen tietää kyllä niiden tärkeyden, mutta käytännössä se tieto vaikuttaa yllättävän vähän siihen miten ihmiset käytännössä toimivat ja kuinka he tekevät valintoja. Kasvisten terveellisyys kilpailee huonosti herkullisen suklaapatukan rinnalla.
Ehkä jonkun pitäisi tehdä näille se minkä Steve Jobs teki puhelimille: poistaa teknisyys ja tuoda ne tavallisen ihmisten saataville. Näistä pitäisi tehdä suklaapatukoita. Miten se tapahtuu? Ei hajuakaan 🤷♂️

Since the #Libera / #Matrix bridge was severed, it's amazing to see how many simply have chosen to go back to IRC. The IRC users are still ghosts on the Matrix side, so the numbers of people left on Matrix are much higher than they likely are.
TIL about another community on Slack who is now being asked to pay thousands to preserve basic functionality 😬
Proprietary tools that offer a lot for free, without fail, will squeeze you. And unfortunately, because of their nature, a lot gets left behind when you inevitably migrate.
When we select tools for our communities, we need to think over longer time horizons.
FOSS options like Matrix for chat and Discourse for forums are the better bet.

I'm very excited to be presenting at FOSDEM in February! I've been working on messaging interoperability for about 2 years now with much of that focus being on developing an open standard for that exact purpose. We'll be exploring how #Matrix works as an existing decentralized open standard for interoperable communications, and how other protocol development work interacts with Matrix.
