Tonight makes three years I've been streaming with #Owncast; three years I haven't had a single issue with the streaming server, adaptive rate video player, and chat interface that I personally control; and three years I've been serving the music more than I serve platforms.
Come over and watch me try to contribute something with a fraction of the value lead dev Gabe and all contributors to the project have.
We have fired up the chat machine. We are assembling for a hangout on the video channel NOW and are pleased to have a live acoustic performance from @SabiLewSounds on the bill.
You are all invited to be comfy with some friendly fedizens and artists.
Even though the shift is small, it's big enough. It's incredible watching the Fediverse grow; first with the Birdsite flocking to #Mastodon, and now with #Lemmy and #Kbin growing in popularity (I only recently learned about Kbin)... this type of growth is enough to kickstart more people coming over here.
I'm looking forward to #Tumblr maybe joining sometime soon (oh, the memes you can see!), maybe some prominent Twitch people will try out #Owncast, maybe I can get some of my family over here...
Have you had a chance to listen to the @linuxlads episode about #Owncast? Gabe sat down with the lads last month and had a fantastic discussion, discussing Owncast in depth. https://linuxlads.com/episodes/98/
New blog post! I wanted to write about future #Owncast features and how they tie into the #Fediverse, because when you don't have people to blab to about them, you blog about them.
Actively on my own mind atm are recent events on the #fediverse, economic instability, and the overwhelming legislative attacks on the #trans community. What's on y'alls minds?
I'll be joined by #owncast creator @gabek, and hopefully you!
Join via text, voice, & video chat! Lurking encouraged too!
Coming up in #Owncast v0.1.0 is an additional way for you to create custom action buttons for your interface. You could always point to remote resources as actions, but now you can just author them from scratch in HTML!
One fewer step required for you to build your own custom UI for tip jars, leader boards, 3rd party integrations or whatever you can think of. It's your server, go nuts.
There are a few methods, pick the best for you. Here's an example, using the installation script. No npm, no pip, no Ruby gems. Just get up and running, so you can start streaming.
One of the most amazing things about the Fediverse is that you can run your own services and set your own rules, building something that represents what is important to you.
If you chose not to run your own software and services, and instead utilize services somebody else runs, it's unlikely you'll be 100% aligned with those who you rely on to run them for you. People are unique, and companies are... companies. It's impossible to be completely on the same page for everything. Therefore, you shouldn't be surprised when they decide not to offer you those services any longer for any reason they choose. Their house, their rules. They owe you nothing.
I've relied on botsin.space to host the @owncast account for a while, but I only recently noticed it's been reduced to a restricted account. Their house, their rules.
So my options are to run my own microblogging service for this single account, or take that functionality offline. If I run it, my service, my rules. But like anybody else, I have to weigh the pros and cons of running yet another service I need to maintain, and this time it's not personally worth it.
Hopefully, this bot has been helpful in sharing live streams to those who wouldn't have normally seen them.
While every #owncast server doesn't choose to be on the Fediverse, hopefully those who want to be shared with others decide to be. And if so, this bot isn't needed anymore, anyway.
Jazzaria starts the show this week, followed by another instalment of Neon City Radio. jumboshrimp makes a return with Catch of the Week, then ENOENT finishes the party with a slot titled '508 Loop Detected'.
Please join again as we cut the RFF #owncast video simulcast channel over to live in a few hours Wed 2100 US EST, Thur 0200 UTC for a live acoustic stream from @SabiLewSounds
We are going to have more chat hangouts and hopefully more live performances, busking, listening parties or whatever else in line with our ethos you'd like to use your community station platform to share. DM if you are keen.
Comfy tzag all. We've just fired up the chat machine. Join us on the RFF #owncast video channel for a hangout and live acoustic performance with @SabiLewSounds
You can chat with your fedi handle if you like, or with a random anonymous name, or just enjoy listening.
If you're not familiar with the project, Owncast is a project thet lets you host your own single-user streaming service, complete with web player, chat, integrations support, etc.
If you're into streaming on Twitch, Kick, etc, but would like something a little more #OpenSource or #Fediverse friendly, check it out.
We have used this for live performance streaming, discussions, video premiere parties, the new years fedi stream parade marathon and hopefully more you'd like to bring to the community!
If you have an idea for original programming live or recorded do DM. We have the venue and a global crew of rather friendly listeners if we're being honest 🥰
For those who use OBS to broadcast there's something I learned a year ago that I don't think people take advantage of.
Nested scenes.
Instead of adding a video capture device to a scene and then trying to make it look the same from scene to scene, you can create a scene with your VCD chosen, create the style you want it to look like, and then use that scene in all of the scenes where you want your camera.
The NYD 24 Global Stream Parade officially kicks off in les than an hour at 0100 UTC.
This will be our thread for announcing upcoming stops on the parade route which can be seen at: https://radiofreefedi.net/nyd24
We and the broadcasters will use #NYD24Parade if you want to keep an eye out, or mute for the day. Boost the participants and let's celebrate discovering some of your fedi streaming friends.
