Washington Post: Using AI to spot edible mushrooms could kill you

"Now, a new assortment of AI-powered mushroom identifiers are popping up in the Apple, Google and OpenAI app stores. These tools use artificial intelligence to analyze photos or descriptions of mushrooms and compare them to known varieties....With its high stakes and frequent mess-ups, mushroom identification is a bad candidate for automation, but companies are doing it anyway..."

Highly skilled firefighters are the last line of defense against , but that line is fraying because the government decided long ago that they’re not worth very much.

A friend of mine, who is an airline , asked me why I took a rather harsh stance against in their recent "troubles". The short answer is that I loathe their profit-driven philosophy.

The long answer is this. inevitably affects lives, and engineering disasters kill not by ones and twos but by the thousands. A company who, for almost a century, have been manufacturing aircraft must hold itself to a higher standard than a fly-by-night web development sweatshop, when it comes to processes, especially those that affect safety. But Boeing, for the past 30 or so years, have raised above . This, I detest, as an engineer.

@etherdiver I'm puzzled. Was she so busy trying to call for help that she didn't try to get out of the car, or was it that she couldn't get out of the car?

tip for all owners: Keep a tool in your car for cutting seat belts and breaking car windows for emergency escapes. Even if you don't land in water, you might want to escape a fire!

Carmakers must bring back buttons to get good safety scores in Europe

In 2026, Euro NCAP points will be deducted if some controls aren't physical.

@arstechnica I applaud EuroNCAP for this.

I hope rating bodies in other parts of the world follow suit.

I also hope points will be deducted for cars without rear wipers. Those cars’ rear view mirrors become unusable if dust, mud, or rain accumulates on the rear windscreen while driving. Especially if the glass has shallow slope causing faster buildup. Among others, recent Nissan Versa, Toyota Corolla, & Tesla models, in some markets, have this safety flaw.
