What's with this trend of apps telling you what you just did? When I hit "/" to hide the filmstrip, Lightroom throws an alert reading "Hiding filmstrip." When I paste from one app to another in iOS, it throws an alert "Pasting to from Bear." When I like an image on , it throws an alert "Appreciation sent to So-and-So." Why??? I know what I just did - that's why I did it! I hate this clutter that serves no purpose. What's driving it?

Super cool that developers are basing their projects' interface on ! In case you're unaware, Upscaler allows you to upscale images. https://flathub.org/apps/io.gitlab.theevilskeleton.Upscaler

There's an Upscaler fork named , that allows you to convert and manipulate images. https://flathub.org/apps/io.gitlab.adhami3310.Converter

Adobe's react-aria library looks great for .

https://react-spectrum.adobe.com/react-aria/index.html

It unfortunately doesn't work with React 18 and NextJS 13 (betas).

It's hooks that provide accessibility primitives. They've put a lot of energy into the project, so ... hmm. Now what (not going back to NextJS pre-beta).

Mastodonians: Any other headless options you've used and would recommend? (even for the basics like a button).

This is a big deal!

I bought the https://calckey.social domain name in December, helped set it up in February, waited a month or so to get technical issues sorted out.

And now it's blowing up.

Most of the excitement has been word of mouth, and there's been a big groundswell in demand for .

This might spread *key apps to the West -- which is very important for the health of the Fediverse!

The way hashtags don't hijack my cursor there.

I do wish Calckey had a better project name. Sorry!

I was quite active in development from 2004 till ~2021. I've created multiple large custom WP installations, built plugins, contributed to Core, spoke at WordCamps etc. People considered me to be a WordPress expert. I have a Masters degree in .

Today I've tried Full Site Editing using the default theme. After an hour trying to coax Gutenberg into the simple design I wanted I had to give up.

Is it just me or is FSE a horrible experience & buggy as hell?

Google Chrome will soon be removing the 🔒 padlock icon from the address bar for HTTPS sites, replacing it with a menu icon instead. It’s been a long journey to finally make this paradigm shift: https://blog.chromium.org/2023/05/an-update-on-lock-icon.html

You know what really grinds my gears?

Trying to highlight a hyperlink for the purposes of copy and pasting the words that are visible within said hyperlink is a total PITA.

Reverting to DOM inspection to copy the inner text of a node is such an obnoxious dance.

Bonus points when the right-click context menu is disabled by same UI dipheads, so then you have to pop open the DOM inspector by digging through menus or remembering the F12 key.

In the early 2000s I made around 200 3D-style icons for a credit management software suite. Here's a small selection from that collection.

Around that time, interfaces and icons were predominantly 3D-styled, way before minimalistic graphic design became the norm.

The icons had to remain recognizable in very small sizes, down to 16 x 16 pixels, so the features needed to be pronounced.

I would like to endorse other minor web apps in the , but most of them are full of UI glitches, are incomplete and downright buggy looking odd things.

From my designer point of view and are the only effective ones, because they speak to people who are used to proper visual design language (read: Non-nerds, non-engineers, the regular people and design oriented people).

Things like , , and newer niche apps cause reactions like: "What is this?", they look like back end is fine but nobody is in charge of the design and the UI has no direction whatsoever. It's the general culprit in the programming world: A back end developer thinks everything is fine when we add a CSS framework and that's that.

If we just get the UI right everywhere, we get more people to the . I just wish there was more /design people willing to contribute.

I've been always attracted to beautiful things. I always list pros and cons in the things I use. I go through dozens of options.

The user interface has HUGE value for me and it can weigh so much it can even top some of the downsides. But even if ALL of the other features are fine and the UI is bad, I have no desire in using the software. It's just the way it is and I'm pretty sure bad UI is a big turn-off for most of the people. Who doesn't love nice looking things?

I keep getting quite a lot of positive feedback about my . Even @Gargron liked my post where I explained the design choices made. Thank you everyone so much about the input. I'm kinda surprised so many prefer mine over the default. I lost count in how many instances enabled it for all their users.

I've been thinking about rewriting the Mastodon base SCSS. I'm a CSS/SCSS guy after all. The new base framework would have

  • CSS variables instead of SCSS variables with SCSS function modifications: Easier to manage
  • Simpler style base: Less nesting, less hacks, less everything: Cleaner code
  • Better and more efficient modularization
  • Accessible and flexible SVG graphics instead of icon fonts like Font Awesome

However, it would be a lot of work. I created my version of the UI in a couple of weeks, then been improving it daily.

Worth noting is that not everyone prefers this choice of design as it's way too close to a site we all hate. That's why I'm afraid if I do all the work and send a PR, it would go in vain. It could still be a good start though.

I have high hopes for to improve the UI themselves and look forward to it to get better over time. I just have ideas. Will keep the choices open here.
