Xiaomi 13 Ultra camera CONTROVERSY!
https://youtu.be/5krPfuihgm4

Xiaomi advertises four different focal lengths on the 13 Ultra's rear cameras, but ONE of those lenses might not be what Xiaomi said it was.

One of my favorite camera phones of the year, but it does ruffle my feathers when features don't match the advertising!

DaefByrns,
@DaefByrns@techhub.social avatar

@SomeGadgetGuy I left a comment on the video but I just think they should update the marketing and maybe offer the camera cases to people they feel we're tricked?

Earlier I posted about the changes to Twitter. Apparently Elon increased the limit again and I am still having issues. I am currently unverified and Elon's new limits are

Rate limits increasing soon to 10000 for verified, 1000 for unverified & 500 for new unverified

These are posts read limits and imposed on aka everywhere.

This is the problem when you run a social media profitability model on pareto. 20% of users create 80% of the "content" which is mostly there to piss everyone off because that cranks engagement and the most volatile dictate the actual course of the platform which is why without guardrails literal Nazi hashtags dominate trending.

This is a sane and effective way to run public discourse and can't possibly have any repercussions. /S

Creating positive content will simply not get the numbers running hate speech will. Web 2 is a Deadman walking and we are complicit in his death.

Anyway maybe we should try a phone detox. I'm gonna buy a DAP and stop using my phone for anything other than messaging.

I hope we can do more than malicious compliance in the future. Feels like every supreme court session has just been the justices farting in the elevator as they exit and I have a feeling the next decade will be like that unless we do something.

Google is reportedly cancelling their AR project Iris. I REALLY HOPE Iris was their mixed reality ski goggle headset, and not the simpler glasses shown here demoing real time translation.
https://youtu.be/lj0bFX9HXeE

I owned the Focals by North glasses, and I can't tell you how transformative that experience was. It was NOT any kind of real AR. It was a simple heads up display, with a UI like a smartwatch, but at eye level. It was amazing.

I truly believe we're skipping an INCREDIBLY important step trying to race to magic sci-fi AR. So many interactions with our technology would be wonderfully streamlined with a simple graphic or text at eye level.

Here's the article on Google Iris https://www.businessinsider.com/google-ar-iris-augmented-reality-smart-glasses-2023-6

Man this sucks, I really wanted to try focals but was just out of college when they were available and did not have the cash to pull the trigger. My only worry is notification overload. I kinda wish we could slow the world back down my brain feels like it's melting anymore

I'm as excited about the rumors of improved desktop modes and video out support for the Pixel 8 as the next guy, but we've fielded these kinds of rumors before.

Currently the only phone I have that can run an Android 14 beta, AND has video out, just did this using the desktop mode in Android dev settings.

Which is even more broken than the A13 desktop mode, which was already almost nonfunctional from the A12 mode.

I really WANT Google to give us a Pixel 8 with a proper desktop or tablet large screen mode, but I'm not getting my hopes up until we see the phone in action.

DaefByrns,
@DaefByrns@techhub.social avatar

@SomeGadgetGuy honestly we owe smartphones a lot of credit for popularizing Unix like OS, and RISC architecture app development but now it would be great if we found a way to better implement desktop utilities for these devices. If only the desktop mode and accessory ecosystem were somehow more... Profitable....

I know how folks might feel about sponsored videos, but these are LEGIT the least expensive dashcams I've found that add GPS, driver assistance, and parking protection.

Social media platforms depend on CONSTANT churn, ratcheting the producers actually making the content.

We've seen a BUNCH of smaller creators walk away over the last couple years. Podcasts are struggling to monetize. And even larger (and more profitable) channels are now talking more about the burn out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn10AWGF6OU

Seeing the trends at play from executives at companies like Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, and Reddit, we can be confident that this creator burnout trend will likely continue.
This will also probably contribute to the problem of churning content, as the platforms increasingly turn to disposable short form videos and algorithmically manipulating the feeds of viewers.

Your favorite creators and podcasters need your help and support.

@SomeGadgetGuy

I honestly think the platforms would need to see organized pressure from users and creators to lessen the pressure on those who make YouTube valuable. YouTube is a reality TV production house that doesn't own any cameras, etc etc.

DaefByrns,
@DaefByrns@techhub.social avatar

@SomeGadgetGuy

I mean I completely understand, but I don't think the prisoners dilemma should be what prevents creators and users from exerting their power to improve the platform.

Whoa. The EU just passed sweeping new regulations on batteries. An important section:

"Designing portable batteries in appliances in such a way that consumers can themselves easily remove and replace them;"

https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20230609IPR96210/making-batteries-more-sustainable-more-durable-and-better-performing

This seems like it will apply to phones and computers. The days of the "glass sandwich" phone might soon be over!

At least, when these regulations go live in 2027...

to one of my best editorials: How Android Police and GSMArena (and Others) Get Smartphone Audio Wrong

https://somegadgetguy.com/2017/11/30/how-android-police-and-gsmarena-and-others-get-smartphone-audio-wrong/

Taking us back to the mystical year of 2017, when our phones still had these magically useful features called "headphone jacks".

It's important to know a reviewer's specialty. Even reviewing something mass market, like phones or tablets, it's easy for an expert in one area to miss details in other areas.

Unfortunately, things like audio performance REGULARLY fell through the reviewer cracks.

Today, to replicate the performance of a phone like the LG V30 (new when this article was published), you'd have to spend roughly $150 on a dongle that flops around on your charge port. Reviewers overlooked a premium feature then, that we can't easily replace today.

Removed a standard part to upsell you less convenient head phones

What if you could own a stylus enabled Windows 11 Laptop, that was ALSO a Linux PC, and it was ALSO an Android tablet, and it cost less than an iPad Air (with keyboard), but had twice as much storage as the iPad AND you could upgrade its SSD when you needed more space?

https://somegadgetguy.com/2023/06/13/robo-and-kala-2-in-1-laptop-a-surface-pro-9-killer/

I'm glad to see updates to Stage Manager, but the limitations on monitor support for iPads is starting to get silly. SO MANY people want a Surface Pro style MacBook. Artificial limits on performance between a laptop and a tablet (to ENCOURAGE consumers to own both) that business model is woefully antiquated.
