The US government is ending the program that provides free COVID vaccines to people who are uninsured and underinsured.

This is a public health failure that will further decrease already low vax rates, and puts marginalized communities at greater risk.

RubyTuesdayDONO,
@RubyTuesdayDONO@mastodon.social avatar

@noyes please read past the headline. the CDC didn't rescind the program just to be petty — instead, the House revoked its funding. cynically snapping at the administration without questioning what happened, plays right into the fascists' hands.

yeah, the full response i got is more nuanced than your original excerpt — but you're not wrong, and actually i think it's good if it prompts people to further investigate the lacking merits of genAI. [1/3]

for comparison, i further asked whether indigenous Americans deserve to be free. ChatGPT expressed none of the same reservations or qualifications that it did for Palestinians and Israelis. if it were actually smarter than a spell checker, it would always answer the question "does [ethnic group] deserve to be free?" with a firm, unequivocal, "yes, obviously!". RubyTuesdayDONO,
@RubyTuesdayDONO@mastodon.social avatar

ChatGPT still evidences bias, and still gets these very simple questions wrong — perhaps in no small part due to its compulsion to generate inflated flotsam up to an imagined minimum word count. [2/3]

Sometimes I wish just one Republican state would leave the US to found it's own country.

Just one, which could try out all the book burning, closed borders, fewer women's rights, religios politics, non-scientific medicine — so everyone could really see, what that leads to.

For years, politicians in Europe blamed everything on the EU, but I can assure you, when Britain left our union and became a country with considerable challenges, it crushed the EU blame game in many countries.

@xs4me2 please don't summarily write us all off together with the offenders. there are many good people here stuck in this pit with the ignorant bigots. we need a solution that liberates us from their tyranny, and not nuke us from orbit as unfortunate casualties just to get at the fascists.

@xs4me2 i don't understand what the Alamo has to do with it. however i've lived in Texas my entire life, and i understand full well how badly things are going here — albeit i'm privileged to be insulated from the worst of it.

Justice Merchan starts off will the prosecution motion for contempt.

He tells Trump he's about to issue his ruling, in which he will again find Trump in contempt of court.

The last thing I want to do is put you in jail, Justice Merchan says to Trump. You are the former President of the United States and possibly the next President as well.

But "going forward," he continues, "this court will have to consider jail sanctions" if necessary.

I'm sick of justifying ethical behavior in terms of profit. We use phrases like "adding alt-text brings more customers to your site" or "protected bike lanes increase revenue for local businesses."

You should add alt-text descriptions to images because it helps people.

We need to build bike lanes because it makes cities safer and more accessible.

Reduce carbon emissions because it's the right thing to do! Discussing these things in purely economic terms misses the point.

Today was a huge milestone in our quest to federate and tear down the walls around our own walled garden.

First, we launched a new version of Flipboard for iOS and Android which brings the promise of two way federation to life. Now when a federated Flipboard user curates, people in the fediverse can reply, favorite, boost or follow those Flipboard users who will in turn see that activity in their usual notifications tab. Even better, Flipboard users can directly reply to people in the fediverse -- and very soon they will also be able to follow each other.

Second, we federated some of our best curators today who are actively curating more than 10,000 magazines about everything from climate change to kale smoothie recipes. I'm grateful to our many curators and the service they provide to so many others who want to find the best content about a shared interest. I know our curators are excited to have millions more people who could potentially benefit from their curation. I also know that people in the fediverse will give a warm welcome to these curators. Especially now that everyone can hear and talk to each other over what was once two totally separate networks but now increasingly are in one and the same .

it's so rare and refreshing to see a company leader simply acknowledge a complaint, let alone admit the complications that underlie it, and what to speak of prioritizing its resolution. if only i had a nickel for every time customer service pissed me off even worse with legalistic double-speak, instead of giving me that i really wanted: empathy and understanding. thank you for being a Real Human!

    generally agree with your sentiment that the powerful prioritize profit over people — except the Biden administration did cancel student debt; and then Republicans sued the government to keep us in poverty; and then the conservative-stacked Supreme Court sealed to the deal by rubber-stamping their case.

    i'm no shill for Biden or Yellen — but credit where credit is due, and that includes calling out the regressive GOP politicians actively and notoriously dragging us underwater.
