While touring #Andalusia in #Spain, I spotted a gleaming tower. Intrigued, I looked it up and found out it was the #Gemasolar Thermosolar Plant which can supply power to 27,500 homes and uses molten salt heat storage technology to keep generating power when there's no sun. More info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemasolar_Thermosolar_Plant - Perhaps #Italy could do with a few similar plants. #energy

Forced cashless society.

Our nearby small market town used to have 3 banks; they're all closed (taking their cash machines with them), and this week one of the two remaining cash machines was removed from the supermarket where it was located.

So, we're down to a single cash machine in an area with a radius (I'm guessing) of around 20 miles.

The cashless society doesn't represent consumer choice, its pace is being forced by financial institutions keen to charge fees on transactions!

alexproe,
@alexproe@mastodon.uno avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 In theory, cashless payments already save banks quite a bit of, er, cash, so fees should be coming down or, at the very least, staying the same. Cashless payments enable banks to save a fortune on physical cash management which is expensive - I know having been given figures by people who work in banks.

Another day, another story to economic disruption from Brexit... this time its the importation of wine.

Possible remarks:

'I didn't see making wine more expensive, on a big red bus'...

Once again Project Fear = prescient prediction

'We can all now enjoy more British wine'!

At last the wine-drinking Brexiters are feeling our pain...

Who cares, I drink beer....

Who cares, we've taken back control.

I'm scrolling through @atrupar's and Acyn's video clips of 's vile spew at CPAC, now in its 2nd hour..

Sorry to be redundant, but if Biden said even ONE thing in any of those clips, it would be over for him.

Yet Trump has duped The News & all too many voters into accepting him "as is."

I don't. At all. And I am not laughing at him. He's lethal. He's toxic. He's malignant.

And the GOP Fascist Party is right there with him.

We MUST do everything we can to end this nightmare.

@GottaLaff @atrupar Don't they realise that Trump and the other speakers come across as insane maniacs? Or is that precisely the impression they want to give? These are very weird and people, as well as being well funded and exceptionally well coordinated too. Quite frightening.

@mastodonmigration @GottaLaff @drahardja Trump is extemely popular with some exceptionally rich people - they could find the money for him to pay his fines. Am thinking of Musk mainly but there seem to be quite a few more. And, as you point out, Russia could bail him out too.

@GottaLaff OK, fine. So allow people to take guns into Trump rallies. After all, it would be unconstitutional not to allow them.

Of course democracy is disappointing. That's the design. Gently disappointing everyone trying chart a middle course. Leaving everyone not entirely satisfied, because resources are finite & everyone wants different things.

Good is mildly unsatisfying for everyone. That is the point. The least shitty system we aspire to

Throwing mildly disappointing democracy away, for not being perfect, is insanity.

Democratic void is terrible for nearly everyone, that's it's main feature.

alexproe,
@alexproe@mastodon.uno avatar

@ArtBear The big problem with democracy IMHO seems to be that just about any idiot can end up in power. We've seen this in the US and in the UK (and in Italy). To make democracy work, we need politicans of a far higher quality with training and experience. Otherwise, and as we seem to be seeing, democracy will fail. Rant over.
