Italian historian and philologist Luciano Canfora has been indicted for slandering Italy's far right PM Giorgia Meloni. In 2022, he called her a "neo-Nazi in her soul" and a "wretch", and she sued him.

Meloni is pro-Trump and pro-Orban. And guess who attended Meloni's party conference in 2023? Mr "Free speech absolutist" Elon Musk.

On February 13, the Russian deputy prime minister in charge of Far Eastern and Arctic affairs criticised Norway's management of the Svalbard archipelago, which he compared to Ukraine.

He called the Svalbard issue "a fight for our sovereignty, a fight for the rights of Russia and Russians".

I wonder if this could be what @anderspuck was referring to when he said Moscow might start a conflict with NATO in a remote area

Maybe people who want the fediverse to become mainstream should stop condoning this kind of attitude. Or at least they should stop wondering why the fediverse isn't going mainstream.

I just watched a video about Russell Brand. It analysed how brand re:Branded from a leftist pundit to a far right conspiratorial nut job.

The reason?

His videos used to have around 100k views or less. When he started posting anti-vaccine stuff, he got millions of views. He fully pivoted to the far right and now gets millions of views from fans willing to pay him.

The reality is, far right content attracts a loyal engaged audience, and is profitable.

Lots of interesting, and often forgotten, lessons.

I'm not "anti-China", quite the opposite. And I don't believe in seeking confrontation.

But I do believe that when states behave like the People's Republic of , they should be pariahs. Regardless of whether some people can benefit financially from doing business with it (people like, ehm, Elon Musk).

Putin's Russia is a pariah. It should have been long ago. And so should Beijing.

My experience with #ChatGPT compared to search is that it can be a huge waste of time because you can't trust anything it says.

For example, I asked it about Taiwan's recent elections and it told me that Ts'ai Ing-wen won reelection. This is false. She couldn't run due to term limits. Lai Ch'ing-te won.

This means, if I ask it a question I need to fact check everything. It also means that the people who don't fact check will be fed a bunch of false and made up information.

@accretionist some people don't seem to realise that a lot of far left maximalist accounts are trying to suck people into an anti-democratic cult step by step via "anti capitalist" talking points and foreign policy issues.

I have seen this myself, since I was almost sucked into this cult a few years ago. I woke up only when some ppl called me a corporate shill for not wanting to abolish capitalism, said the 2020 Dem primaries were rigged and called Biden a fascist/same as Trump.

@accretionist indeed. Some people make maximalist demands and everyone who points out that they don't have a coalition gets branded a fascist or capitalist etc.

There are many left-wing parties in Europe but they don't get the votes. Look at Varoufakis in Greece. He talks like a prophet but didn't get a single seat in parliament. You look at Italy or Germany, left-wing parties just don't have the votes. But instead of trying to compromise, they double down and attack liberals.

@accretionist there is also a tendency by certain leftist groups of trying to impose dogmas. I consider myself quite left-wing but I'm also a pragmatist and I like to explore various solutions and viewpoints.

But in some left-wing circles you are asked to accept a whole set of predefined dogmas. Which in turn makes those groups less appealing to the broad electorate. You need a broad coalition to win elections.
