Jack Dorsey explaining exactly why no single company should own a social media platform.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

But Jack Dorsey also still prefers that Elon Musk own Twitter instead of a bank.

Which is a wild thing to say knowing what we know now.

Here’s how Jack Dorsey want to monetize Bluesky:

  1. Subscriptions
  2. Ads
  3. Commerce/Transactions

It's beautiful 😍

The directory of https://fediverse.info just got an update!

What is that?

An opt-in search engine for topics and people. If you're looking for a fresh new way to discover the Fediverse, this is the place.

Made by @dansup, an API is being developed so that different Fediverse server software such as Pixelfed, Mastodon, and Calckey can utilize it for social discovery and recommendations.

Check it out here:

@fediversenews

luana,

@fediversenews @atomicpoet @dansup how do you opt-in?

Please donate to @dansup!

He's developing three important Fediverse projects:

  1. @pixelfed
  2. https://fedidb.org
  3. https://fediverse.info

All these tools are critical to the future of the Fediverse.

In particular, #Pixelfed will be released on iOS and Android by the end of the month -- which will give people who use #Instagram an easy way to migrate to the Fediverse.

Dan does a lot! Let's show him appreciation and love!

People keep bringing up the very tired “Linux on the desktop” meme to dismiss the Fediverse.

But a meme is just a meme.

In the real world, Linux dominates.

Your phone? Probably Linux. Your car’s infotainment system? Linux. Your router? Linux.

Chromebook? Linux.

Windows has a Linux Subsystem too.

Linux has won.

The “Linux on the desktop” naysayers don’t even realize it.

The Fediverse should be so lucky.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Truth be told, the Linux paradigm probably will be what becomes of the Fediverse.

What will happen is that most people will use the thing that gives them familiarity and comfort.

Which is fine.

But soon we’ll see the Fediverse begin to unlock things we didn’t think possible.

Weather trackers will use it. So will video games. It will be used on millions of websites.

Most people won’t know because it will simply power everything.

Turbo_Steve,

@atomicpoet but that's the point... Linux has won everywhere EXCEPT the desktop? It is the appliance-os of choice that can only ever be exposed to techies or hidden behind proprietary front ends. It leads on penetration, but only when it sacrifices the dream of democratising the desktop. Would this kind of 'backend success' be a win for the fediverse? Yes... But only if my 'digital footprint' can be nomadic and idempotent. It's VERY exciting...but a lot of problems still to solve.

If you want to onboard friends and family to the Fediverse, https://jointhefediverse.net is an amazing tool.

Made by @stefan, this site explains -- in easy-to-understand words -- what the Fediverse is, how it works, and what to try.

This is a must for everyone who wants to tell the world about the Fediverse!

There's no Mastodon slump.

Sign-ups continue to increase -- albeit, not at the same rate as in November -- November was a spike.

While Monthly Average Users (MAUs) decreased since November, it's increased again this month (according to @Gargron).

But what's more interesting is that Half Year Average Users (HYAUs) is at a peak.

And we're very close to breaking 1 billion posts per month!

See chart.

The tech press would love Mastodon to fail and Bluesky to succeed.

Why? Because it fits very neatly into a pre-determined narrative.

Mastodon is supposedly made by a ragtag squad who flew too close to the sun.

And Bluesky is supposedly made by Silicon Valley—they’re supposed to win.

There’s nothing the tech press love more than an outcome that’s predetermined.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Every app on the Fediverse could talk to Bluesky if they really wanted to, and Bluesky really was as decentralized as they say they want to be.

For example, look at Friendica. It uses at least four protocols to talk to other server software:

  1. DRFN
  2. Diaspora
  3. OStatus
  4. ActivityPub

In theory, adding AT protocol shouldn’t be a big deal—it’s open source.

The question is whether Bluesky actually wants to federate with other servers.

Fast Company reviews 6 Twitter replacements, and author @harrymccracken calls Mastodon the "heir apparent".

He says the Mastodon crowd is "friendly and engaged".

And he observes that Mastodon has higher interaction even with lower follower counts.

ErikUden,
@ErikUden@mastodon.de avatar

@atomicpoet Mastodon Interaction is higher because if you make good posts people will acknowledge them as that - on Twitter most people don't even have a choice whether to acknowledge them as the algorithm straight up won't show them your posts

Today is the day I talk about what is and what it does. 🧵

In this thread, I will explore what I believe to be the most important features of Calckey.

SPOILER ALERT: While Calckey focuses on microblogging, that's where its similarities with (and ) end.

@fediversenews

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Galleries is another key feature.

Calckey allows you to add, curate, and write a description of user-made collection of images.

Here's an example of one person's gallery:

is testing out post imports from Mastodon.

Which means that if you're migrating your Mastodon account to Calckey, you can take your posts with you.

While Mastodon post imports are currently in beta, it's available on calckey.social.

To access it, go to Settings > Export/Import Data.

See screenshot.

@fediversenews

daj,

@joshuafoust @atomicpoet @fediversenews I did it a few days ago. Imported 700+ of my Mastodon posts. It worked really well. Also my followers and who I was following.

The Calckey instance I am on supports the import, which is why I moved

bumble,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews
We've tested it a few times and it works well. A new user on our server also did a mastodon migration to their account and it worked as expected.

Sorry, the sabotage of Twitter is not a “disaster for democracy”—it’s the logical and inevitable endpoint of surveillance capitalist control of our communications infrastructure.

Those who control a message’s delivery system control the message.

Twitter was always owned by surveillance capitalists—it NEVER served democracy.

mike,

@atomicpoet Everyone thinks it's a utility communication system. It's actually an advertising platform that unexpectedly became a communication system

“It’s not fair to compare to Mastodon because Mastodon has been around for years and Bluesky has just been released.”

Actually, Bluesky has been in development since 2019.

That means it’s 3 years younger than Mastodon, and 1 year younger than ActivityPub’s validation by the W3C.

There’s also the matter of BlueSky receiving $13 million in funding while Mastodon receives $32,000/month from Patreon.

All things considered, it’s @Gargron who’s the underdog here.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

The other way to look at is that this is what they’ve built after four years in development and $13 million in funding.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Of course, I realize that most people don’t care that this is a non-profit going against a Silicon Valley-funded corporation.

For the same reason most people don’t care about whether their food is organic vs. factory farmed.

But to those who do care, that should give them context about who builds what and how.

Meta’s ActivityPub-enabled Twitter competitor is moving ahead.

The project is called “Barcelona”.

It will be its own independent app, and it’s being pitched as “Instagram for your thoughts”.

How do you feel about Meta joining the Fediverse?

Here’s a screenshot of Barcelona.

https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/metas-twitter-alternative-barcelona-is-taking-shape/648482/

@fediversenews

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

For nearly 20 years, Meta has proven time and time again that they care nothing for the open web.

And should they use the open web, it’s for sucking up as much personal data as they can.

So I’m not excited about Meta joining the Fediverse, and I’m skeptical.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

That said, should Meta actually federate with Barcelona, it should be seen as a victory of sorts.

It means the biggest social media company in the world validated the notion of a Fediverse.

I’ll probably block Barcelona. You probably should too. Meta probably won’t be a good citizen.

Nevertheless, adoption of decentralized social media will soon be in full swing.

atomicpoet, to fediversenews
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Well, this is an unexpected curveball.

Jack Dorsey hopes that Bluesky will be “temporary”.

How likely is Bluesky to actually be “temporary”?

@fediversenews

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Jack Dorsey even implies that is just a “proof of concept”.

If that’s true, I hope no institution is setting up an account on Bluesky.

Bluesky is fine for shitposting. But anything work-related shouldn’t be hosted on a “proof of concept”.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

My big conclusion from Jack Dorsey’s thread is that is NOT comparable to Mastodon.

You can’t compare a temporary proof of concept with something that is production-ready right now.

The hint is Bluesky’s website: staging.bsky.app

It’s “staging” for a reason!

Trying to migrate from YouTube to PeerTube?

PeerTube Companion, a Firefox extension, will redirect you to a PeerTube version of a video, when trying to reach it from YouTube -- if it's available on PeerTube.

It's under heavy development, so use at your own risk.
