Okay, so it turns out that Spring ended up being a sequel to Flowers. Which, you know, it pretty wonderful. Watching the world wake up through your lenses this month was a special treat. You can enjoy Daniel walking through the favorites on the Glass YouTube channel, or you just enjoy your scroll solo.

Sony revokes widely despised Helldivers 2 PSN linking policy https://www.polygon.com/24150011/helldivers-2-playstation-psn-linking-policy-revoked

The Helldivers 2 furore is bonkers. If you missed it, Sony, seemingly against wishes of the dev studio, pushed to add a mandatory PSN Network sign-in months after launch on one of their biggest, most popular games on PC, and not only did the community revolt (dropping review score into the teens), but the game is now pulled from 177 storefronts and Steam are issuing refunds (as PSN only works in certain countries). The studio has told players to make their voices heard

404 Media is doing a great job at getting tech companies to moderate bad actors on their platforms, impressive for such a small indie publication. Their reporting directly led to action at two major tech companies this week: Discord shut down the Spy Pet search engine that sold access to user messages. https://www.404media.co/discord-shuts-down-spy-pet-bots-that-scraped-sold-user-messages/

And Apple removed multiple AI “nudify” apps from the App Store.

I'm trying to pay my Virginia income taxes online, and they have disabled paste in any field of consequence. Paste in a password? Nope. Your bank's routing number? You're gonna have to hand-key that. Your bank account number? You better believe you're typing that in.

If you wanted to force people to create crappy passwords and cause them to accidentally siphon money out of strangers' bank accounts, this is how you'd do it. And somebody went to extra effort to make it be like this!

Browsers should refuse to respect paste-disabling. This is not something that any user wants.

A lot of much smarter folks will have other things to say about the legacy of O.J. Simpson, but I will say this:

His murder trial marks a pivotal moment in the decline of American broadcast news. It accelerated in our media environment an unapologetic centering of flash over substance, spin over good faith, and provocation over consideration.

It permanently damaged broadcast news in ways from which it has never recovered, nor have we.

"McDaniel was offered a more lucrative contributor contract after she agreed to appear on MSNBC and not just NBC News"

I may write about the irony of all of this for my weekend blog post.

Teri_Kanefield, (edited )
@Teri_Kanefield@mastodon.social avatar

This is the problem right here:

"In a friendly call between Jones and McDaniel, the two spoke about the . . need to have differing views on the airwaves."

People don't need "differing views."

They need facts.

The way MSNBC presents "news" the facts gets lost in an avalanche of opinions, speculation, and conjecture.

They are making their viewers less informed and angrier.

RSS is making something of a comeback (it never went away, though Google and Facebook did their best to kill it), in part because forward-looking publishers see the value.

The excellent @404mediaco news site explains "How We Built a Full Text RSS Feed" on the Ghost newsletter/blog software, and shared the process with all Ghost users. Kudos all around.
