@ someone in the comments who has made your Mastodon experience better, a little explanation as to why would be awesome too! You are welcome to do more than one.

@RickiTarr @tekeous Landalf the Grey makes Mastodon better for me because he posts cool stuff and his avatar reminds me of the game "Dungeon Defenders".

#Threads is testing federation for a few selected profiles. I'm now following @mosseri! It's one-way for now, but it's exciting. It's a step towards the interoperable social web that we've been advocating for ๐Ÿ™‚

@gerowen@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron @mosseri That's cool. I can't see any of their posts, but it'll be cool to see when it actually rolls out.

Itโ€™s hard not to say โ€œAIโ€ when everybody else does too, but technically calling it AI is buying into the marketing. There is no intelligence there, and itโ€™s not going to become sentient. Itโ€™s just statistics, and the danger they pose is primarily through the false sense of skill or fitness for purpose that people ascribe to them.

gerowen,
@gerowen@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron I've been telling people this forever and they don't want to hear it. They're so enamored with the science fiction of "AI" that they don't want to believe that these companies will lie for money.

Itโ€™s fucking nuts that service providers can just remove your purchases like this without refunds.

@gamingonlinux Playstation did the same thing to me way back with movies I had purchased directly from them.

With modern consoles you don't "own" anything, you're just renting a license to content for as long as they feel like making it available.

I was shocked witnessing someone logging into their bank on the phone in public recently:

  1. Their phoneโ€™s big display was at full brightness so everyone around could see what they were doing.
  2. They typed their password in, so no password manager. Unsurprisingly the password was weak: 5 lowercase letters and 1 numeric character.
  3. They didnโ€™t have any kind of 2FA set up!

How on earth is this still happening?! ๐Ÿคฆ

@ilyess Because people are lazy and don't want to think too much.

We're doing ad-blocking wrong.

Instead of blocking ads, we need to ensure they register being shown as often as possible.

Drain these ad budgets with useless traffic ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

gerowen,
@gerowen@mastodon.social avatar

@fribbledom I saw a browser addon ( adnauseum maybe? ) recently that did exactly this, registered false clicks on as many ads as possible as you browse the web to flood their analytics with garbage data.

gerowen,
@gerowen@mastodon.social avatar

@viktor Once the PiHole sees each device individually, you can just add them as "Clients" based on MAC address, then add those clients to groups, and you can then set your lists or domains to only apply to certain groups.

gerowen,
@gerowen@mastodon.social avatar

@viktor . I use it not only to block ads and malware network wide, but to place content restrictions on all my kids' devices. I've added lists for social media, pornography, gambling, etc. that only apply to my childrens' devices. When there's no school the next day, re-enabling YouTube is as easy as hitting a toggle in the interface.

gerowen, to linux
@gerowen@mastodon.social avatar

So I was working on a computer for my mom earlier. It's dual booting Debian #Linux with KDE because she wants to learn Linux, and I figured KDE resembles Windows. Anyway, I was setting up shortcuts so she could find all of her files she normally uses, but there's one problem. #Microsoft #OneDrive appears to do something weird. There's an empty file called "OneDrive", that appears to be a pointer, but the OneDrive "folder" isn't present. Anybody know where OneDrive "actually" stores files?

gerowen,
@gerowen@mastodon.social avatar

@kkarhan It's just weird; it "says" in Windows that the actual path is D:\OneDrive (it's stored on a separate drive), yet when viewing that drive in Linux, OneDrive is just a file with a size of 0 bytes, so there's some weirdness going on there, some metadata attached to it to obfuscate away the real location. It probably has something to do with how it handles some files being physically there and some of them are only online, but still get displayed when you open the folder.

    @mori_au I just don't get the hype around trying to hack your way into iMessage which is a proprietary walled garden. If Apple wants to keep it proprietary then just tell people on iPhones to use Signal. It's open source, cross platform and has been audited by third parties. If they don't want to use Signal to talk to you, then obviously they don't actually want to talk to you that bad.

    3.5 dropped on the stable channel last night and today alongside a firmware update for Valve's official dock. This updates the Arch base along with new graphics drivers, new firmware (UEFI/BIOS) for the itself and more. It also adds support for HDR, variable refresh rate and several bug fixes.

    I did some testing with Death Stranding and the HDR looks great, though it'll take some getting used to. Lighting aside, the colors seem to pop more.
