We're currently having issues with the community instance, as reported by some users, the ingress and pull processes have been lagging during the weekend.

We've restarted the services and it is slowly coming back to normal but we have this issue too often now to ignore it.

We believe after looking to it for a bit with the help of NITEMAN (https://www.drupal.org/u/niteman) that the bottleneck could be PostgreSQL, for the time being we've increased the memory but I think we will need more actions

Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

While content is federated currently, isn’t. And while that doesn’t diminish the decentralized nature of the , having a single identity — that a user fully controls — would make it easier to sign up for multiple apps. My analysis of recent discussions here featuring @evanprodromou, @rabble, @deadsuperhero, @timbray, @osma & others. https://thenewstack.io/one-login-towards-a-single-fediverse-identity-on-activitypub/

It feels like Mastodon (the software) could refactor to decouple identity if it was a priority.

Some personal news: I'm now a contributor at @news! I'm so excited to work with the team over there reporting everything happening in the world of distributed social media.

For my first post, I wrote about Ghost joining the 🙏🏼

What's exciting about this is that it isn't just an ActivityPub plugin - it's a top-down re-thinking about what Ghost is as a service. This is ActivityPub for publishers done right.

Congrats to @johnonolan and team!

I wrote a follow-up post about Ghost's entry into the Fediverse on augment!

I believe Ghost's integration will have larger implications for the newsletter landscape, eventually bringing the slow death of another social silo:
Substack.

The network effects of the Fediverse are in play and will skyrocket Ghost's discoverability further than Substack does. It's time to make the switch.

Reflecting on Columbine, 25 years later, a survivor writes: "When a door plug falls off a plane, we ground hundreds of planes and investigate. When it’s believed a car battery might cause a fire, millions of vehicles are recalled. When a batch of lettuce isn’t processed properly, we remove it from the shelves and the FDA posts a warning. We regulate, investigate and set up systems and protocols for safety in this country for nearly everything — except guns. We’ve set up a national hotline for suicide prevention, but nothing exists to report suspected would-be mass murderers. Why? Why do we refuse to do better?
If we’d taken mass shootings seriously 25 years ago, how many children would be alive today? How many families’ loved ones? How much blood has to be spilled before it’s enough? Will our collective empathy ever kick in?

I am doubtful."

Recently, we saw an embarrassingly ham-handed (and false!) allegation against OpenTofu. While the specifics were new, the tactic is nearly as old as computing: this is FUD -- the "fear, uncertainty and doubt" made famous by IBM when used against the upstart Amdahl. Today on Oxide and Friends, @ahl and I are going to talk about this latest FUD -- as well as FUD's storied history in our industry. Bring your own examples, and join us today, 5p Pacific!

WHERE THE WEB IS GOING: The convergence of LLMs and web advertising will lead to "ads" consisting of several hundred gigabytes of javascript containing a (weighted) neural network designed to generate unique per-user video advertisements—generated on your computer at your expense to ensure the imagery is unique and evades AI-based ad-blockers.

"AI spam" is an entire AI, squatting on your CPU and making it glow dull red as it works out how to capture your attention.

Welcome to the spamularity.

My personal pro tip for writing good alt text: Before you post an image, think of someone you deeply care about. Your spouse. One of your parents, or kids. Your best friend.

Imagine that they suddenly lost their eyesight. How would you describe that image to them?

The bike shop I work at, #REI, just got back to me to tell me that they are going ahead with their policy of installing cameras in the shop to monitor employees. They say these are not used to track productivity, but the CEO is a union busting ex-Amazon executive and he has given himself that power, so that's enough for me. My last day will be mid-May and I am now properly desperate to find a new job before I loose my house. Leads in the bike or software industry welcome in or around #Atlanta.

Asked if a restaurant could serve cheese nibbled on by a rodent, the Microsoft / New York City government official AI chatbot replied:

“Yes, you can still serve the cheese to customers if it has rat bites,” before adding that it was important to assess the “the extent of the damage caused by the rat” and to “inform customers about the situation.”

AI is spewing out this sort of surreal garbage all over the world right now. AI is a monumental grift.

I recently created my first @ViewsField plugin, which apparently is unique among plugins in that you also need to implement a hook (hook_views_data_alter) to tell Views about it and how to use it. The properties you define in the hook seem very similar to what other plugins take as annotation.

Is there something especially complex about this plugin type that regular annotation isn't enough, thus the hook? Or is this just a case of a plugin type that COULD be simplified but hasn't yet?
