Look, you don't have to read @molly0xfff's defenestration of Chris Dixon, but honestly, life is short and nice things are few and far between; particularly in tech:

Review: In "Read Write Own", the Andreessen Horowitz general partner and web3 superfan Chris Dixon lays out an unconvincing argument that blockchains are what it will take to fix the web.

@molly0xfff I recognize this genre of literature - this is the kind of book that hardcore Christian writers write for other hardcore Christians to read so that everyone involved can feel comfortable knowing that they're right and everyone else is wrong. It's not intended to convince an outsider to believe as it is to shore up the belief of a believer who is starting to doubt.

The latest screed from the Andreessen Horowitz bros insists that the blockchain sector -- by amazing coincidence a major part of the firm's portfolio -- will save basically everything.

Please read what @molly0xfff has to say about this. As always, right on point, and a needed andidote to what the blockchain promoters are selling. https://www.citationneeded.news/review-read-write-own-by-chris-dixon/

This toot is a friendly reminder that if and when you hit a paywall on the internet, check your local library to see if they have access to this resource. Your #library card entitles you to access to more than just books! (Am I subtooting the link below to the Boston Globe? Yes. Yes I am.)

Don’t have a library card? Get one! For most systems all you need is a piece of mail with your mailing address on it - even if it’s just a postcard from a friend. And it’s ✨ free! ✨

An online pastor was charged in CO for a $1.3 million #crypto scam. He's released a 9-minute-long video explaining that the Lord told him to sell a cryptocurrency with no clear exit", and spend some of the proceeds on "a home remodel the Lord told us to do".

Here's a supercut.

So, you have decided to leave Substack! Good for you! Now what?

Ghost is a popular alternative. @caseynewton's Platformer and now Molly White's @molly0xfff Citation Needed are choosing Ghost. Here is a guide written by Molly detailing how she migrated to Ghost >>> https://citationneeded.news/substack-to-self-hosted-ghost/

Another is WordPress Newsletter, which now federates with Mastodon! @hildabast has a great guide on how to move your newsletter to WordPress >>> https://absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2023/06/22/substack-versus-wordpress-newsletter-first-impressions-and-migration-tips/

Whatever you choose, congratulations!

@molly0xfff's post on migrating from Substack by self hosting is a master piece in clear communication. This is how you cover a complex issue without glossing over details due to hindsight while also not making the topic sound more daunting. A great example of building stairs and elevators after you've climbed instead of pulling the ladder. Highly recommend reading even if you're not in the newsletter sending game.

More good analysis of the Substack situation from @mmasnick
As a fan of decentralised systems, I like this part:
"Running a private website is all about tradeoffs. You have to make lots of choices, and those choices are difficult and are guaranteed to piss off many, many people (no matter what you do). For what it’s worth, this is still why I think a protocol-based solution should beat a centralized solution every time, because with protocols you can setup a variety of approaches and let people figure out what works best, rather than relying on one centralized system."

Feeling good about moving my newsletter off Substack this week.

Some news: Substack will remove some Nazi publications, it tells Platformer. It insisted this is not a reversal of its previous stance but a fresh interpretation of its existing guidelines https://www.platformer.news/p/substack-says-it-will-remove-nazi
