In news, just closed access to source code.

Two years ago, they cancelled CentOS, which was the (highly popular) free and open source version of RHEL.

In response, two popular community forks immediately popped up, and

Now, by closing access to the RHEL source, RedHat has just screwed both of those community projects, effectively forcing anyone who wants to continue using the RedHat branch...to pay RedHat for the privilege.

Friendly reminder ...

this Prigozhin Insurrection is happening less than a week after Russia put nuclear weapons in Belarus.

nattiegoogie,

@fedops

Actually not sure that's true.

Last month, Lukashenko explicitly promised to give nuclear weapons to any country that supported Belarus and Russia.

Will he? Does he even have access to those weapons to give them away? IDK.

However, these are "tactical" nukes (it still blows my mind that someone paired those words together), with perhaps local control.

Mainly, my point is just, it's complicated, and unstable over there.

You know that "Embrace Extend, Extinguish" expression flying around lately? Wonder where it came from?

"'Embrace, extend, and extinguish' (EEE)...is a phrase that the U.S. Department of Justice found that was used internally by Microsoft to describe its strategy for entering product categories involving widely used standards, extending those standards with proprietary capabilities, and then using those differences in order to strongly disadvantage its competitors."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish

nattiegoogie,

This is, literally, a formal corporate policy and strategy, invented by Microsoft (thank you, Bill Gates), to wipe out competition.

That Wikipedia article includes a hella long bullet list of specific examples of Microsoft intentionally doing this, dating back to the mid-90s...browsers, word processors, Java, IM, email, Linux.

Microsoft spent time and money on fucking up all of them.

If you don't think Facebook is doing the same thing, here and now, you're just not paying attention.

So I just read the announcement that sent out to subreddits that were still dark, including my (tiny, 200 person) subreddit of trans memes.

What should we do about it? I don't really want to hand over control of r/t4t_irl. I had a lot of fun moderating it. I earned my place there.

I'm going to be talking to my fellow mod, but I'd be happy for advice from mastodon, too.

nattiegoogie,

@The_Augusto

Have you set up a new subreddit in a or server?

I think all moderators should quit protesting, and transition to helping the members of their subreddits migrate to new homes.

Y'all tried, but Reddit is doomed. Exit the building in an orderly manner, as fast as possible.

For the skeptical (like myself) ... per Snopes, this is a true story, with only a couple of minor quibbling inaccuracies.

"Alec Raeshawn Smith's lifeless body was found in his apartment on 27 June 2017, 27 days after his coverage under his mother's health insurance policy had lapsed due to his age. The cause of death was diabetic ketoacidosis, ... because it lacks enough insulin."

This law in 🇨🇦 is silly! 🇦🇺 had a similar law, which resulted in banning the continent for a season (Australia 🇦🇺 amended the law later on).

We might see ban Canadian news agencies too. & Facebook are currently banning news from being shared in Canada on their respective sites.

When writing software, enable people to change their usernames.

You don’t know who might make their username based on their real name, then realize they need to change their real name, and are now stuck with a username based on their dead name.

A passing thought, probably needs refining.

"A Clockwork Intelligence"

There are two intuitive but incompatible definitions of .

"Something that is not at all intelligent, but does something that appears to be thinking to casual observers."

&

"Something that is actually thinking, using some process different from 'typical' biological intelligence."

By the first definition, etc, are quite intelligent.

However, they do not even qualify for the 2nd one.

On the face of it, Justice Alito is guilty of bribery. These are his defenses:

  1. Although I accepted something of value to ME, it hardly cost the billionaire anything at all.
  2. Although I then ruled in favor of the billionaire at the Supreme Court*, I didn’t realize the billionaire was involved.
  3. I am personally incorruptible. Anyone who knows me knows that I would never sell my vote.

Am I missing something? Depending on the details, 2 potentially sounds like a viable defense.

If billionaires want to do stupid shit on the assumption governments will pull out all the stops to rescue them, they should pay a shit load more in taxes.

Otherwise, oops, sorry you climbed into a metal coffin you dumped in the ocean after using your ridiculous wealth to bypass everything that would have stopped a normal person.

You can block all zip domains with the following uBlock Origin rule:
