Respect to @ryanbroderick for saying the words that so many journalists seem unable to utter: Threads sucks.

Threads already has more than 30 million users, but that doesn’t mean it’s sure to displace Twitter.

We shouldn’t forget Meta is a terrible company with a long history of spreading right-wing propaganda. Plus, if Threads succeeds, it will be filled with targeted ads just like Facebook and Instagram are now. We can do better.

Google and Meta are threatening to pull Canadian news from their platforms because a new law will make them pay publishers a small sliver of their digital ad profits.

I talked to @David_Moscrop about why they’re not just fighting the Canadian government, but are using it as an example to jurisdictions like California that want to do something similar.

Apple was reportedly hoping to sell a million Vision Pro headsets in 2024, but it slashed production to less than 400,000 and is asking some suppliers for enough components to make as few as 130,000.

Good news for those of us who don’t want this future!

Google and Meta are threatening to pull news content in Canada in response to a law that will force them to pay news publishers.

For Disconnect, I explain how the tech giants have effectively directed criticism at the government with the help of local commentators to distract from the power they wield in Canada and their own culpability in starving news organizations.

Marc Andreessen wants you to believe AI will save the world. But just a couple years ago, he was saying something very similar about crypto.

The truth is Andreessen doesn’t actually care about improving people’s lives. His positive vision of a world made better by AI tools is just a means to pump up the valuations of companies his venture capital firm has invested in. We can do much better than Andreessen’s lies.

Last week the SEC sued Binance and Coinbase, launching a legal process that could determine the future of crypto in the United States.

On , I spoke to @molly0xfff to dig into why this is the “final boss fight” of the crypto industry and why it’s unlikely they could ever comply with US securities law. It’s a fascinating and very informative episode!

The risk presented by AI isn’t superintelligent computers, but how it expands the ability of those in power to shape our lives and ultimately to decide who lives and dies.

Dan McQuillan’s latest piece is a must-read to dispel the AI hype. “To put it crudely: AI can decide which humans are disposable,” he writes.

Apple’s Vision Pro headset is a $3500 product designed to isolate you from your environment and strap a screen to your face so you’re constantly making money for tech companies.

When it launches next year, every rich early adopter who puts one on their face should be ridiculed. It’s not a vision for the future of computing we should accept.

After a pandemic boom, ecommerce companies are having a hard time getting us to buy more online and are even cutting back on perks like free returns.

Tech billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos tell us the world is dying, but if we support their plans for space colonization they’ll save humanity.

Hollywood writers are on strike over the effects of streaming on their profession and are concerned about the impact of AI.

But the problem they face runs much deeper. On every level, the digital transition in the film industry was an attack on workers’ power. Digital projection got rid of unionized projectionists, while digital production shifted power to executives. It needs to be challenged.

Google’s vision for the future of search shows how generative AI is all about increasing corporate power.

Instead of sending you to different websites, Google has scraped the open web to generate plagiarized answers to keep you looking at ads on Google. We need to stop being distracted by AI hype and fantasies about intelligent machines, so we can push back on the real threats before it’s too late.
