So, Boris Johnson is to join GB News; it figures. You know, I hate to give Trump credit, but he got it right (well, not grammatically) when he called Johnson “Britain Trump”: a lying, narcissistic, privileged man-child, a cut-price huckster, a sack of flaming dog turds in a badly fitting suit.

I despise both of them with all my heart, also brain, liver and spleen.

Data published in 2020 shamed the government by showing no English river was in good chemical condition. The last full water assessments were in 2019, when just 14% of rivers were in good ecological health and none met standards for good chemical health.

So what do the Tories do in this type of situation?
Yes, you've got it.
Remove the requirement for annual reporting and change the standards against which water quality is assessed.

Please join me in wishing @RickiTarr a very happy birthday! She is caring, thoughtful, hilarious, fiercely loyal, and all the other fine qualities that make a person a joy to know. She's a great friend and I'm so happy she made the leap and came over to Beige Party early on when it was all mostly just a half-baked idea in my addled little bird brain. Since the beginning she has made Beige Party a better, kinder, more thought-provoking place. Thanks Ricki, you're the best!

One of her many talents is asking really interesting questions that force you to examine yourself and your beliefs and the things that are actually important to you. She's endlessly fascinated with people, their life experiences, and what makes them tick. Unfortunately, I am not as good at coming up with interesting questions but luckily I also know that she loves awesomely bad movies, the kind of movies that took a lot of effort to be as uniquely bad as they are, movies that are weird, cheesey, sometimes nonsensical, but too idiosyncratic to be dull. Movies like Treasure of The Four Crowns, Troll 2, Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders, and the oeuvre of James Nguyen. So in lieu of an interesting question, please tell me about your favorite awesomely bad movies and what you love about them.

Happy birthday Ricki, you truly are one Hot Ferrari.

I'm being mansplained to on Facebook and it's the funniest thing ever. a guy is telling me how watches can't work without electricity, it's not possible even if they're wind up, that power needs to be stored in a battery. I'm trying to explain to him about springs, but he doesn't understand I'm dying 😂.

The other day I got home to my smoke alarms occasionally going off. I eventually discovered two things:

  1. Some newer interconnected alarms flash their power-on indicators after they've been triggered (and continue until you press the test button) so you can determine which one's the problem and

  2. A small spider next to the offending alarm

After... dealing with the spider, the nuisance alarms stopped. I can only assume it kept crawling into the sensor, setting it off, and crawling back out!

So as you may have noticed, I'm a sucker for a good retro cutaway diagram. This is one of my favourites, by British "Cutaway King" G. H. Davis.

It triggers my home nesting instinct, but it was probably pretty terrible to be on board one, what with the swell in the Channel (and the whole "crashing in an airplane" thing).

@weebdeluxe @bookstodon Reading his blog, it appears that he was planning to write a much heavier, more serious book, but then the COVID pandemic hit and he was both physically and emotionally unable to write it- so he wrote The KPS as a confection, a little entertainment for a difficult time. A lot of other people felt the same, it seems, so that may be the reason it for the nomination. I know he was surprised himself- he said so on his blog. https://whatever.scalzi.com/2023/07/06/that-hugo-nod-for-kaiju-other-related-thoughts/

The guy whose company built the duct tape and chewing gum submersible that imploded over the Titanic wants to build a habitat on Venus, where the surface pressure is 75-100 times higher than on Earth, the temperature is hot enough to melt lead, and the atmosphere is basically sulfuric acid...

Any takers?
