Nobody uses imagemaps anymore. The mid 90s web was absolutely lousy with imagemaps. These days? Nothing!

skrrp,
@skrrp@meow.social avatar

@foone you don't need them anymore.

Web development has now reached a point where management sends a Word document of the site to the designer. The designer splits it up into 15 billion divs each with a separate image. The developer then attaches an onMouseOver and an onClick to each div.

This only costs 5MB in the raw HTML transfer and only requires 3GB of RAM to render the page. Progress!

The iPod server was a powerful first iteration music sharing device. While not designed for convenience, its internal RAID can still be expanded with modern compact flash cards for 1.25TB of on-the-go storage.

skrrp,
@skrrp@meow.social avatar

@NanoRaptor I once had a Mac guy turn up at my workplace and tell me 'the document you need is on this iPod'.

I plugged it into a Linux machine and it mounted the filesystem just fine.

The horrors I saw in that filesystem, how it was laid out and how the iPod needed to use its database to present real names to the user ....

I never want to see that again.

I don't know what surprises me more - that someone is selling a home-made "encryption" app on ebay, that it's on a monthly subscription, or that someone actually bid on it.

Ideally roles like "president" or "supreme court justice" or "mayor" would be more like volunteering to be banker for monopoly, or a role in the church Christmas play. A well-defined role, a service to the community with some prestige and an opportunity to be trusted.

It's not really all that important who exactly is doing the job. Someone simply needs to wear the "president hat" and "do the president things."

I'm aware this view isn't exactly typical. 1/

skrrp,
@skrrp@meow.social avatar

@futurebird

I think the correct way to choose politicians is;

  1. Ask for people that want to do the job
  2. Shoot everyone that applies
  3. Choose people randomly from the adult population to do the job

Bezos and Musk have it deeply wrong.
The problem isn't that we need a trillion people to have more Einsteins or Mozarts.

The problem is we don't nurture and protect the ones we have.

Stephen Jay Gould wrote: "I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops".

This is the answer. Society is currently optimised around the collection of capital into ever increasing pools that we plebs are kept out of.

We have to work 40 hours a week so that those pools can get bigger and the owners get to do what they damn well please off the back of our labour.

Only if you are rich can you achieve Maslow 5, because you are granted the leisure time and the capital to pursue your own interests. Everyone else is stuck at level 4. Some people are even happy with this and don't wonder why they can't progress.
