For the question of "Why use ?" has never been answered. There should be clear merits to wade through all the complexity that this choice brings, right?

Yes, its ultra flexible, and you can define your own semantic , and theoretically it could provide a robust extension mechanism to AP protocol. Except that right now it doesn't.

What's the vision of a Linked Data ? What great innovative would it bring, that makes it worthwhile?

🤩 Aren't you just delighted by all those proprietary software apps for the ?

😮 Don't be. Each time you choose proprietary you help turn the fedi slowly in the direction of the usual corporate hellscape that the rest of the Web already is.

😨 And then we end up in an online space where for years we can complain to each other how we squandered an opportunity and how won once more.

🎯 Use apps instead, created by the public for the public.

🌻 Keep the Fediverse open.

This is nice to see..

A student can't afford to pay the $8 per month for #Obsidian sync, so builds a #FOSS alternative. Then posts to HN and says "I probably violate ToS, so will take down the repo if asked".

Then the Obsidian CEO replies. Explains they aren't VC-funded and the $8 bucks subscription keeps the light on. Applauds the work of the student, points to other open ways that content sync can be handled and gives advice "if you rename, there's no ToS problem". 👍

#Fukushima nuclear plant will start to ditch 1 million tons of tritium-polluted water out into the sea.

> The decision comes weeks after the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), approved the discharge, saying that the radiological impact on people and the environment would be “negligible”.

Yea, right #IAEA. This is just as trustworthy as #Shell concluding that the burning of #FossilFuels has negligible effects on the earth's atmosphere.

Time to move off #Ubuntu has finally come. So many #Linux #distros to choose from, though. Makes my head spin 😵

I need one with:

  1. Great #driver support (maybe get that webcam working finally)

  2. Smooth & slick #UX / #UI (I'm less of a terminal guy)

  3. Focus on #security, security-first approach (but not the ones that are made for James Bond)

What do you suggest? #AskFedi

Witnessing another occurrrence of the #ReplyGuy anti-pattern this morning inspired me to write some thoughts about this social behavior that is so common on our #Fediverse that is based on #PublicSquare #Microblogging mechanics.

On the #SocialCoding forum I created a category for #SocialExperienceDesign (or #SX) patterns, and the "Reply Guy" #AntiPattern is the first entry in what might be turned into a pattern library collection.

Frequently frustrations about the Browser oligopoly rear its head on and people talk on creating alternatives.

Such projects exist. Chances for success may benefit from trimmed specs.

To discuss the ideas for a , a project 1st started by @alcinnz on Codeberg, a chatroom was created:

Heard on HN re:

> We (the internet community) made such a terrible mistake with . We formed connections and communities and friendships [but] those connections are only allowed to exist as long as they are part of a profitable system. How awful it is to reduce human connection to that. To think that I am only allowed to maintain certain social connections as long as they continue to produce monetary value for an intermediary. An awful, awful mistake.

Good news.. @excalidraw

The latest version of #Excalidraw looks like it is starting to become a true open alternative to #Miro for collaborative sketching and sticky notes sessions.

Plenty cool features, #FOSS, self-hostable, stores stuff locally / syncs encrypted, save & export, etc.

Check it out at:

There's a lot of focus on #journalist #Xitter to #Mastodon migration, but the overall story is quite a bit bigger I think.

The #Fediverse offers huge opportunity for independent journalism in a world where so much of #news media are consolidated and in the hands of shady mogul billionaires. In other words Fediverse is both a threat to existing business models, as well as market opportunity.

Though I don't know if it applies, this toot was triggered by: https://dair-community.social/@ZekuZelalem/111207098660272388

About Megathread discussions on the Fediverse..

There are tons of valuable insights being microblogged around, available for participants & readers who happen to bump into them.

As microblogging goes they are fleety and slide towards forgetfulness and link rot as soon as posts are added.

Recording and summarizing these insights in a different medium is dilligent manual labor.

But can we even do this? Can we quote + attribute others' public toots or do we need ask consent for that?

A good online privacy-respecting tool to plan a meeting. There's one that allows participants to specify availability ranges.

Have used such tool before, but forgot the name 😬

🤔 What if #OpenDocument used #SQLite?

Benefits would include:

  • Smaller documents
  • Faster File/Save times
  • Faster startup times
  • Less memory used
  • Document versioning
  • A better user experience

A nice thought experiment by the SQLite folks..

To vendor or to fork? That is the question.

Since #Rust Crates.io started giving #RUSTSEC warnings on the unmaintained status of #yaml-rust library, there's a bit of a panic, not in the least because 1,000's of crates depend on it.

This article by the maintainer of Insta snapshot testing tool gives a nice analogy to Collateralized Debt Obligations (CDO's) with considerations on whether you should fork or might vendor the lib.
