ProPublica, A Powerful #Atlanta #Movie Executive Praised for His #Diversity Efforts Shared Racist, Antisemitic Sentiments in Texts
Ryan Millsap has built important relationships with Black leaders and Jewish colleagues.
But his private communications, copies of which were filed in court, exhibit derogatory views toward those communities.

sam, The bike shop I work at, #REI, just got back to me to tell me that they are going ahead with their policy of installing cameras in the shop to monitor employees. They say these are not used to track productivity, but the CEO is a union busting ex-Amazon executive and he has given himself that power, so that's enough for me. My last day will be mid-May and I am now properly desperate to find a new job before I loose my house. Leads in the bike or software industry welcome in or around #Atlanta.
sam, On the bike side of things I have around 5 years of experience as a mechanic, shop coordinator, and trainer. Everything from basic tune ups to fork and shock work to service advising and shop operations.
On the tech side I have ~13 years experience in back end web systems, API design, and realtime communications. Mostly in Go and Rust.

AtlantaAntifa, At the end of Black History Month in February, the Dekalb County branch of the NAACP reported that an important historical marker had been stolen from Lithonia, a majority-Black eastern suburb of Atlanta. The marker had been erected in 2021.
Our city, and the South as a whole, is fighting against "Lost Cause" white supremacist propaganda in order to achieve a wider, clearer understanding of the past. There has been resistance and racist backlash to that resistance: the grotesque carving of Confederate generals that defaces neighboring Stone Mountain is the most prominent example. Whoever stole the Lithonia sign hates that progress towards truth and desperately wants to erase Black history from our shared story. They will fail. We, and everyone else who stands against racism, will make sure they fail.
Here is the text of the marker.
"Mob Violence in Lithonia: After Reconstruction was abandoned in 1877, white mobs from Lithonia terrorized the Black community through lynchings that denied Black people their constitutional rights and equal protection under the law. On July 27, 1887, a white mob from Lithonia lynched Reuben Hudson near the Georgia Railroad stop in Redan. Mr. Hudson lived in Covington but worked in Redan. On July 26th, a white woman in Redan reported being assaulted by a "short and heavy set, and very black" man. Low on train fare that day, Mr. Hudson walked 11 miles from Redan to Conyers and boarded a train closer to home. A conductor presumed Mr. Hudson fit the woman's description and had him arrested in Covington. The next morning, as police officers escorted Mr. Hudson back to Redan by train, an angry mob of white men boarded at Lithonia, intent on lynching him. Though legally required to protect Mr. Hudson, the officers handed him over to the mob in Redan without resistance. Despite his pleas of innocence, the mob dragged and tortured Mr. Hudson before hanging him to a tree. Five years later, on April 2, 1892, a white mob from Lithonia began to chase two unidentified Black men after a young white girl reported an assault. When the mob returned to Lithonia without the men, it was reported that "it was generally understood that they were lynched." Despite a functioning legal system in DeKalb County, mob participants were not held accountable for these lynchings."

#Atlanta #transithttps://saportareport.com/bill-to-abolish-grta-and-the-atl-gaining-steam/
wesley, @ShmosKnows I do think we need to start getting the state more interested in fixing transit in the region, but its hard when so many in state government seems to have it out for the city of Atlanta or transit or both.
We need to start asking more questions of the state about why transit is so poor. Like why MARTA is the largest transit authority in the country without state funding. Everyone wants to complain about MARTA service, but we need to realize that MARTA was handicapped from the very beginning by the state legislature.

sam, Apparently Georgia has a program now where low-income households can lease solar panels and have no up front cost for the solar install. After the lease and their power bill the monthly cost will still be lower than their old power bill. This seems almost too good to be true; what am I missing here?

ATLpaul, So many times I see developers "check the box" on #walkability and #urbanism without actually doing it. This street in #Atlanta has wide sidewalks with greenery and public art. But there's no activation. There aren't even doors or windows at street level. Why would anyone want to spend time here? The bare minimum is not enough.
theceoofanarchism, Atlanta Keeps Putting Up Roadblocks as Organizers Push to Vote on Cop City
"On January 29, two activists locked themselves to construction equipment belonging to the main “Cop City” contractor, shutting down the work site in downtown Atlanta for hours. “Myself and countless other residents have tried every legal avenue to Stop Cop City—but the City government has stonewalled us every step of the way,” an activist called Temperance said in a press statement. “I don’t want to have to be doing this today, but direct action and civil disobedience are the only options we have left.” Both activists were arrested and jailed.
In a way, the movement was returning to its roots. In 2021, the fight to stop Cop City began with direct action. After two years of protest, organizers extended their effort to the ballot box. Some felt it was critical to let Atlantans weigh in directly on the construction of a vast new law enforcement training center—and they were betting that the will of the people would ultimately come down on their side. On a more practical level, a referendum campaign struck Mary Hooks, a lead organizer for the Cop City vote coalition, as a straightforward process with delineated steps and rules: a signature collection phase, a break while the city verified them, then on to a massive voter turnout effort. “We were like, ‘This seems very clear in terms of the path that we need to be walking on,’” she recalled.
As it turns out, the path has been anything but clear. The Atlanta city government has thrown up barriers at every turn, miring the petition gathering and signature approval process in bureaucratic and legal delays. The city has even drawn the ire of mainstream Democratic politicians and voting rights groups in its attempts to deploy classic forms of voter restriction."
igd_news, Activists in #Atlanta have put a call out to support John Mazurek, who was recently arrested as part of an ongoing campaign of repression against the #StopCopCity movement.
From Defend the Atlanta Forest:
"John "Jack" Mazurek was arrested in Atlanta, GA on February 8 and is being held without bond at Fulton County Jail, which is notorious for its poor conditions, overcrowding, and gross mistreatment of its inmates. They will be there for at least two more weeks until their preliminary hearing. They are still in the holding cell sleeping on the floor. This is unacceptable.
Call in to the jail at (404) 613-2024 to demand they be:
-Moved to general population
-Fed nutritious vegan food
-Given coffee"
