Our GNSS buoys in the glacier mélange are named after birds, fish and mammals and our snow site sensors are named after plants. I don't speak Greenlandic at all (yet), but this is a great way to learn a few words...
Researchers now have unlocked the genome of the #Arabica species and traced its origins to a natural mating between two other coffee species an estimated 610,000 to one million years ago in the forests of #Ethiopia. That makes this species older than our own species #HomoSapiens, which arose in #Africa about 300,000 years ago.
Armenia agreed to return four villages that have been under its occupation for three decades to Azerbaijan. It agreed during the eighth meeting of border demarcation commissions, chaired by Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev and Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan, gathering along the countries'...
Fleeing from war, the experience of Romani people in Germany differs from that of other Ukrainians. They often encounter racism instead of help. More than 1.1 million people have fled to Germany as a result of the war in Ukraine — including an estimated several thousand Romani refugees, members of Europe's largest minority....

The study collected 1,661 firsthand reports of change in sites across all inhabited continents and aggregated the reports into 369 indicators of climate change impacts, including changes in...
Bad news out of the #MiddleEast... Despite international pleas for restraint following #Iran's largely symbolic strike on #Israel, #Netanyahu just ordered a #missileStrike on Iran. This escalation can only result in more conflict and death. At this point, I think the US has to seriously reconsider its support for Israel's far-right #Likud government.
@fluffykittycat Israel isn't the problem. It's Netanyahu and his Likud party who are to blame. Israel is a country that has been captured by a violent, far-right party that consistently escalates conflicts rather than deal strategically with its adversaries. They basically believe they can shoot their way to peace, which is an absurd notion. Maybe US aid should be contingent on Netanyahu stepping down, and new elections being held. A leadership change is needed.
Nigeria has rolled out the world's first vaccine against all strains of meningitis. The shot will help ease the burden of disease in Africa's “meningitis belt.” Nigeria has become the first country in Africa's "meningitis belt" to introduce the new Men5CV or 'MenFive' meningitis vaccine. It is the world's first vaccine to...

It's still a welcome, considering the already escalated situation, wherein, China is just waiting for the #Philippines, and its allies, to make a mistake. We definitely need every protection there is right now.
My question is, since I'm not knowledgeable with the Typhon system, would it have been better if they deployed it in a different region instead of near Taiwan? I mean, as far as protection it can give goes.
Then again, the US government's intent is always more than two, and one of it is to “protect” #Taiwan. It isn't so much for the Philippines only.
@youronlyone@pilipinas@philippines@thejapantimes This only speculation, but it seems this placement in the Philippines keeps China on their back foot regarding the Spratleys. If they use real violence against a ship there, they will be attacked by both subsonic and supersonic missiles simultaneously. Those missiles could be fired by the Navy, but this ostentatious placement by the Army is a line in the sand so to speak. The Tomahawk’s ability to hit the Chinese mainland is a bonus.
Ikhlas was from #Ethiopia#Africa who came to #India in c1600 CE
Many of the immigrants who came from there rose to important positions in the courts of various courts of the #Indian Kingdoms.
Out on the ice with a bigger team today, here's a completely accidental drone shot showing our colleagues from the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources deploying some instruments under the sea ice to measure ocean noise and narwhal populations.
DMI and GINR are collaborating in the EU #HorizonEurope project #ArcticPassion which this works contributes to. I was flying the drone and doing snow work for DMI that will be used in another EU project @polarRES, and it will probably also be used together with ESA satellite data: a nice example of EU projects working together in the #PolarRegions #Greenland#Grønland#Fieldwork#Fieldphoto#Fieldwork2024#Arctic#Snow#SeaIce#DMI#GINR#NCKF
Today marks one year since renewed fighting began between the Sudanese Armed Forces and a rebel paramilitary group called the Rapid Support Forces. More than 14,000 people have been killed and more than 8 million refugees have fled since April 15, 2023, according to estimates, but the death toll could be much higher. NPR has more about the brutal war and Russia’s involvement.
