Trying real hard not to slide into every "switch to firefox" thread this weekend.

They partner with both Google and Cloudflare. Two of the most evil companies on the planet.

They've been caught doing skeezy things on multiple occasion.

macOS & iOS folks: consider switching to and supporting Orion (& Kagi), where at least you're nigh guaranteed to not be the product in some way.

All these "thought leaders" rly need to mebbe lean into the first word in the quoted text for a change.

@hrbrmstr After a first try, it looks great! Only the cookies consent pop ups… for which my only option for now is to have with .

Am I correct that no other browser on than Safari allows to use an adblocker?

I mean, seems to block a lot of stuff, but no way I can block consent popups with on ?

EDIT: apparently it can!

Good question, website!

  1. Faster page loading
  2. Content doesn't get obscured
  3. Not getting tracked by data brokers
  4. Not getting infected by ransomware via vulnerable ad networks
  5. Forcing publishers to pursue sustainable revenue streams instead of racing to the click-bait bottom
islamicaudiobooks,
@islamicaudiobooks@mastodon.social avatar

@limepeep @thomasfuchs It could be argued that 3rd party are by their very nature, unethical.

If website owners agree to display ads which they have no control over and which could be promoting the exact opposite of their values, doesn't that mean that they care about $$ more than the products/causes the ads are promoting?

Or do the ad platforms let content creators choose what ad topics and keywords to disallow?

YouTube being aggressive against ad blockers is making me want to never watch another ad from them again, I'm going over and above to make sure ads don't appear on any device that uses YouTube. They are motivating me to invest in this weird war they are fighting.

@andycarolan https://social.lol/@andycarolan/111250664556522494

ithoughtisawa2,

@michaelgraaf @selzero @andycarolan The aggressiveness seems to only be in Chrome. Work makes me use Chrome and I get that ad blocker message, but in Firefox (on the same machine) I don't., and I don't see ads. I have on the network and use and in both browsers.

TomSellers, to security

Roughly 2 weeks ago Google patched a critical vulnerability, CVE-2023-4863, that was being exploited in the wild. The broad impact of the root cause of the vuln and the fact that it will have a long tail of unpatched software has been poorly communicated. You can read more in @dangoodin 's excellent article on Ars Technica.

As pointed out in the article above, Electron is based on Chromium and is impacted. Electron is bundled in a ton of apps that people might overlook.

I threw together the following shell command to help macOS audit which versions of Electron apps are installed.

find /Applications -type f -name "*Electron Framework*" -exec <br></br>  sh -c "echo  "{}" && strings "{}" | grep '^Chrome/[0-9.]* Electron/[0-9]' | head -n1 && echo " ;<br></br>

When run, you should see something similar to the following:

/Applications/Visual Studio Code.app/Contents/Frameworks/Electron Framework.framework/Versions/A/Electron Framework<br></br>Chrome/114.0.5735.289 Electron/25.8.1<br></br><br></br>/Applications/Slack.app/Contents/Frameworks/Electron Framework.framework/Versions/A/Electron Framework<br></br>Chrome/116.0.5845.188 Electron/26.2.1<br></br>

Last week i used Vivaldi exclusively on Windows,Linux and iPhone and this week spent back on Brave and while i like their (Braves) privacy features and believe they offer more in this regard than Vivaldi their crypto focus is a big annoyance of mine.

So today went back to Vivaldi and one major annoyance really is how adress url autocomplete works so the upcoming 6.2 update should adress that and can´t come soon enough.

And no reader view on iPhone yet in Beta. Submitted a FR for it through TF feedback but im assuming it will come at some point. Oh, and sync of search engines does not work but hopefully it is also being worked on.
But Vivaldi on iPhone is shaping up quite nicely

And secondly why is there no merch shop in EU? 😅 I´d be happy to support with a purchase. But shipping and tax to get anything into Sweden from USA is a bit too much for me. Your HQ is next door (country wise) so not having shipping within EU is a bummer.

Safari with Adguard Premium on IOS (still) work fine with blocking YouTube ads.

I was hoping I could use Safari to add YT to my home screen as a shortcut but Google being Google obviously doesn’t allow that. What was I even thinking trying.. 🤣

I feel like we are living in ad world and its sickening. 2049 style.

Uber? Ads
Plane? Ads
Watch a movie? Ads
Tiktok? Ads
Smart tv in home? Ads
Alexa? Ads

Its enough. Its a violation of our boundaries. Sick of it. And sick of breaches caused by selling data.

What are some ideas to stop ad proliferation?

What's the best approach here? Create a custom rule every time in AdGuard? Report it somewhere (e.g. one of NextDNS lists)? "Accept all" hoping that my protections will shield me from all theses trackers?

Please help 😔

    I appreciate wanting to measure engagement, but I’m pretty fed up with links in newsletters being email tracking links with redirects. I’d say 80% of links I would otherwise find useful, are now utterly useless, unless I agree to being tracked. Which I do not.
