Whenever you see the words “ads”, “cryptocurrency”, “blockchain”, “web 3”, or “AI”, just replace them with “farts” and you’ll know whether you want them or not.

“Can the fediverse survive without farts?”

Yes, perfectly well.

“Will farts replace people?”

I hope not.

“The European Commission embraces farts.”

That’s unfortunate.

“This new startup wants to improve your life with farts.”

I’m good, thanks.

I updated my WordPress plugin that warns your site's visitors if they don't have an ad-blocker installed.

https://wordpress.org/plugins/detect-missing-adblocker

EDIT: You can now fully customize the note, including links to plugins and browser extensions you want to suggest.

By default, a link to my blog with a list of popular options will be shown.

: If you are a user, and you suddenly started getting ads on , check out this Reddit post:

TL;DR: either purge the filter list cache or disable/re-enable the "Quick Fixes" list.

In other news, I'm currently recovering from this mild heart attack of suddenly experiencing ads on YouTube for the first time in probably 10+ years. 😵

Dear mozilla@mozilla.social,

I just found a bug in your browser! You certainly would NEVER introduce with tracking ids right into the UI itself - right? Right!?

Maybe check who has commit rights or something…

It seems Mastodon is now "serious enough" that people want to advertise here. Well... glad you won't.

Let's see how they like me cancelling my monthly on $400/mo worth of cleaning products, pet products, and cooking products! I'm an driver by-day and it's nothing for me to stop by instead!

50+ sites are using my Detect Missing Adblocker WordPress plugin, which lets you warn your site's visitors if they don't have an ad-blocker installed.

Huge thanks to everyone who shared it over the past few weeks!

There's a few ad-blocking methods that the plugin can't handle yet, so if you have a bit of time and necessary skills, please have a look at these open issues:

How to block on

Block ads on the web: Firefox + uBlock Origin.

A must have, if you want to browse the web without ads, trackers, malware and more. There are other browsers you could use, but with , you can install add-ons to help you mitigate all the tracking and ads. You can even install desktop only add-ons now, and supporting a engine which is not (controlled by Google) like every other major browser.

There are multiple forks available on the F-droid if you don't want to use plain firefox. This works on desktop too, I recommend .

Block ads on any app with: .

My favorite way of blocking ads, you have control over which domain the app can connect. It works like a VPN, but it does not make any outgoing connection. The bad thing is, if you want to use an actual , you can't have both at the same time and you need to disable your custom DNS.

I recommend to enable in settings > advanced options > block system apps, and individual domains too. When you open the app for the first time, it asks you if you want to block essential request for the apps to work, I recommend to enable this if you don't want apps breaking.

You android vendor may be killing the app, for this reason is necessary to add the app in the list of apps not be optimized by the system. If this issue keeps happening follow the guide from dontkillmyapp.com (advanced)

Official website: TrackerControl.org

Set a custom in the settings.

A DNS works like a translator, computers are good with numbers, but we are not good at memorizing long numbers. Computers communicate with each other using the Internet Protocol (IP), which are pure numbers. For example, your instance is 104.26.8.209 but is easier to us just type lemmy.world.

A DNS is like a table where it has a relationship between keys pointing lemmy.world to 104.26.8.209, so your computer knows where is the computer is trying to connect.

Let's imagine an app is trying to connect to "https://ads-from.company.com", if you are using a DNS which blocks known domain ads it will redirect that request to "0.0.0.0" which is like sending it to a black hole. There are multiple DNS available, which different purposes, for ads, malware, porn, gambling, etc.

VPN has a guide in how to use their DNS for multiple devices.

Alternative front-ends.

Have in mind that these are not full bulletproof protections, one may work better than the other, and can break from time to time. With popular services with ads, like social media, you could use alternative front-ends to their official client or website.

Here is a list of alternative front-ends and an add-on to automatically redirect to them, you have to use it with a browser and you can add as a shortcut to the home screen, better if it works like a https://libredirect.github.io

Alternative apps

  1. YouTube: NewPipe, LibreTube, NewPipe x SponsorBlock
  2. Twitter: Squawker
  3. YouTube Music: Harmony Music
  4. Twitch: Xtra, Twire

Lesen).

Being interrupted by ads is far more likely to make me start avoiding a product or brand than actually buying their stuff because I start to associate them with being annoyed.

Clearly my reaction is not common enough to make ads unprofitable. It would be nice if it were.

Now that streaming services are re-introducing or forcing ads (like YouTube), I'm cancelling in return.

peertube while it still needs work, atleast the content library is getting better.

When I was using it back in october there was content but not to the extent of what's on their now. It's almost identical to the early 2010s of the type of content you can find. Just emptier comment sections.

No #ads , and no #adblocker pop-up blockers. it's great. It's also great the type of content that can be found on there if you do more specific searches like for idk.. Sonic, Sanic, Flandre scarlet, touhou, Pokemon, Naruto, Mario and even Minecraft might return something these days on Peertube.

however they are still lacking on modern stuff, particularly the kind to draw interest from #tiktokers . Or you're modern day #YouTuber or twitch user.

Creators, get to work. Pick a Peertube server and get your content on peertube .

This ad is really smart and well-done, challenging our assumptions about what people with Down Syndrome can do, and maybe that our assumptions are limiting them (surely true in many other cases too).
