So, #Smithereen no longer requires a username when signing up. You instead get assigned one automatically, of the form "idXXX" where XXX is the ID for your user record. You can change it later in settings if you wish. Current Mastodon versions handle this change no problem.
The username is only visible in two places:
The URL of your profile
When someone mentions you
So it's not very important. Definitely not important enough to be a required field when you register.
@cliffwade just reading the word "Diablo" makes me shiver. I played Diablo III and I am traumatized by the nemesis that would kill me in two hits every time they showed up. I can still hear the war horn sound that announces their appearance in my head 😂
@marialeal Oh goodness. Got to love when you remember things like this about certain games. I've never played Diablo III so I'm not familiar with it but will have to look it up.
My #ActivityPub server is receiving “GET /poco” requests from #Friendica servers (based on the user-agent). Can anybody point me to the documentation for this behavior? #AskFedi
@omz13@hypolite I see now what your talking about. This is super weird. Maybe a bug in federation between the newer version that masto.social is running and #friendica since the thread is all intact on my version of mastodon.
Anyone else on #Misskey / #Sharkey having trouble getting the follow to stick rather than hang at processing? A common occurrence for me with bot accounts. Had a problem with PodcastIndex and the dev found an issue with authorised fetch with their implementation. Fixed and I can follow. Wonder if having same issue here?
@jo When I've noticed this it feels almost like a visual bug. Like, as if for some reason the "response" to the follow request wasn't arriving. I think it only happens when following someone off-server, even when they don't have follow requests enabled?
@renwillis Tombstone is much more fun! I was going to explain the context, but it’s basically the climax of the film, so if you ever do see it: that’s the good bit.
@gbhnews what was the point of what Rob Hale did? To say "see its hard to give out money"? Sir, these students are poor. $500 is catching up on a loan, or a buffer to stop overdrafting
#EmpoderaLIVE is the hashtag to discuss the ongoing conference in Málaga. It mostly happens on closed suveillance networks, but we may as well start somewhere and free the conversation here on the decentralized, open network #Fediverse.
Thinking about attempting to code an #ActivityPub service as a learning project, and to perhaps solve the social lock-in issue of gaming platform profiles that really pisses me off. 🤔
I really really don't like #DRM, however I'm way too attached to my almost 20 year old #Steam profile and like to do video game achievements. Having a unified, federated profile that pulls its data from all the different sources (Steam, PSN, Xbox, RetroAchievements.org and especially GOG) would be neat. #gaming
@Natanox I am not familiar with these game achievement systems, so this may not be usable for you..
I had various fediscussions in the past where some form of federated verified badges were mused about. Verified to avoid fakes. Various times #OpenBadges spec was mentioned, which is JSON-LD based.
Another thought is.. you may get into trouble using official artwork. But that may be an opportunity for artwork communities around badges and get fedi-art alternatives.
@Aakerbeere
