New stuff in Android accessibility, including NLS Humanware Braille display support, ability to select and edit text in the onscreen Braille keyboard, and new API's for developers:
So today when I get home, I'm gonna try resetting my Samsung phone, and seeing if that fixes the Google Assistant issue. Better than spending another $500 or so on another phone right now. Y'all why do I do this to myself. iOS works okay, and yet, here I am even messing with Android. Like maybe I'm a masochist or something? Same thing with Mac and Linux, although with WSL and Homebrew I don't feel the call of the foss as much anymore. Gosh I wish I could be one of the normal blind people that are just happy with their iPhones and don't even think a thought about Android. Sometimes.
I had a survey where I asked users on Mastodon which Vivaldi products and services they are using. This is the result:
83% Vivaldi on Windows, Mac & Linux.
65% Vivaldi on mobile
56% Vivaldi sync
39% Vivaldi Social (Mastodon)
13% Vivaldi Forums
9% Vivaldi Blogs
1% Vivaldi Automotive
11% used none of the Vivaldi products and services.
724 responded.
It is great to see how many are using Vivaldi across devices and sync. Vivaldi is one of the few browsers that offers browsers on all major OS and the only browser to do that and provide the browser in cars as well.
It is also great to see how many are using the different Vivaldi services. We are happy to provide ways for our community to engage and to support the Fediverse!
If you wonder what Vivaldi is, the best way to figure that out is to download it from vivaldi.com.
Whoever is responsible for Instagram's accessibility on Android apparently has very strange ideas about what accessibility means in the first place.
Instagram on Android utilizes 0 TalkBack actions, unlike its iOS counterpart, VoiceOver, which extensively uses them.
And we can't long-press messages, stories or posts to bring up relevant context menu options on Android.
Since numbers 1 and 2 haven't been implemented, you need extra flicks in the Instagram Android app to perform what a single VoiceOver action can achieve. So, for instance, to like a post or comment, you should flick right and select the Like button. Other actions also require extra flicks, making the interface crowded and difficult to navigate.
Why can't we read the text of stories when they are written in, say, Persian? We should use Instagram's Translate feature to read the translation in English whereas the Persian text is perfectly readable via VoiceOver on iOS.
And, in passing, it's also worth mentioning that What'sApp, another Meta app like Instagram, has 0 TalkBack actions on Android, in contrast with its extensive VoiceOver actions on iOS. #Accessibility#Android
I've been reacquainting myself with #Android#accessibility this last week after mostly ignoring it for a decade and have some thoughts about my experiences.
Trying to find an #Android app that can block specific apps (and only those apps) from specific Wi-Fi SSIDs, but allow them to be connected to other SSIDs. No luck finding anything with this kind of control yet. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Lesen).
Possibly unpopular opinion: using Android on a Samsung feels far less integrated than on something like a Pixel. This is in large part due to the duplicate apps. Google Keep Notes, and Samsung notes. Google Messages, and Samsung Messages. Google Assistant, and Bixby. And on and on it goes. Don't get me wrong, Samsung makes amazing phones, software included, and when I need to upgrade my Android phone, I'll definitely go with either a Galaxy or a Pixel. But it just feels... so divided. Meanwhile, on stock Android, it's all one thing. Just Google Keep. Just Google Messages. Just Google Assistant. Etc etc. There are pros and cons to this, of course, like if you don't like Google, but I love how integrated and nice it all feels. It's also worth noting that the last Galaxy phone I used for an extended period was the S10+, but I do know that at the very least, you still get two voice assistants, and basically two setup wizards. #Samsung#Google#android
So, this month I want to buy some good Bluetooth earbuds. Ones that won't lag and stuff with Android. I have a Galaxy S20 FE 5G, but I'm not really sure which codecs it really supports. So, which headphones/earbuds, under like $300, are really good, have nice base like the AirPods Pro, and have as little latency as possible?
We're getting closer to Thunderbird for Android! One of our next steps for K-9 Mail is to incorporate Thunderbird’s Autoconfig mechanism. This will dramatically improve the new account setup experience.
So... I left Evernote months ago when they hiked their pro plan subscription (like 163% !) It was bloated, and their free plan was crippled; that + the company had been struggling for years to find a CEO who could bring some kind of vision back to the app. It all flopped and they were sold to Bending Spoons.
Over the ensuing months, I was fortunate to find a replacement! An Open Source, fully encrypted, Evernote killer. And what a note taking app it has become.
A major release (v3.0) was launched officially today. 8 months of non-stop development and testing by a two-man Dev team has really brought this app center stage. These guys are hands-on with listening to user feedback on their NN Discord server; when they find time to sleep beats me (the plight of the developer).
Read about this latest journey AND all of the great new features of v3.0 that are note-taking game changers, on their blog post:
You're going to hear more about Notesnook in the weeks and months to come and it won't be coming from me. It will be from a growing userbase that can't help but share the awesomeness that Notesnook brings to notetaking.
