Day 2 of more app design for my upcoming app called "PeerTuber".

Progress:

  • I'm hitting the public APIs returning data from a single instance

  • Coming up with a base design so I can work around it during development. The app will have multiple themes.

I've been focused on the home feed "look" over the last day but now I'm going to dive more into functionality and the other tabs such as Discover and Library.

I was slightly entertaining Android yesterday, for a moment. Bigger battery, seems to work better with Bluetooth headphones, better speaker and all that. Then I looked in my drawer of cables for a USB C to USB C cable to connect my NLS EReader Braille display to my Samsung phone which I paid a good $600 for. And there were none. So yeah, that faded fast. The only way to use that Braille display on Android is over USB C. And no I’m not using a dongle to connect it either. It’s just ridiculous. So I went back to my little iPhone SE 2, and enjoyed using my Braille display over Bluetooth as it was intended.

🆕 blog! “Should your phone be a webserver?”

I really like this article from Rohan D "Every Phone Should Be Able to Run Personal Website". In it, they make the convincing case that phones are perfectly capable of hosting websites and - if we want more people to escape the walled-gardens - this could be a good way to get people back into […]

I feel like I post this every few months, but: is there a launcher for AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE to the latest Launcher, but lets me use a different search engine?

I love the stock launcher:

• At a Glance
• Combined app/web search
• Very little customizability because good defaults
• Smooth animations/integration w/Recents
• Ability to turn off Google Discover feed
• Simple gestures (⬇️ notifications, ⬆️ all apps)

ALL I want is instead of

Probing the internet hivemind, trying to help a colleague: their android phone country setting says UK, but their google account was originally created in the US, and hence the Google Play store is still set to US. There are no buttons – despite what google support online says – offered to change the country in the Google Play account settings. So UK-only apps cannot be installed. Updating the address in the google account didn't help. What else can be done?

So one of the things for me about Android is the TTS engines. Apple has, basically, three speech engines built into every one of their operating systems. Vocalizer which is what VoiceOver starts off on using, Macintalk which is like Alex, and Fred and all that, and Eloquence. Three different ways of speaking, pronounciation sets, all that. Actual choice.

On Android though, a Pixel comes with Google TTS. And if you've ever been somewhere with no Internet and heard a low quality, robotic voice from Google Maps, you've heard what we have to deal with on a Pixel every single day unless we get something different. So on Android, there are a few more options. RH Voice which honestly doesn't sound so good to me in English, ESpeak which is as robotic as you can get and was last updated on Oct 23, 2022 (almost a year ago), Vocalizer which had its last update on Oct 30, 2021 (which is better than I thought but still feels unmaintained), and that's about all I know of. On Samsung phones, you can get Samsung TTS out of the box, and it's pretty good. Of course, then you get Samsung's TalkBack, Samsung's version of everything, but also all the goodies that come with Samsung phones. Oh and Samsung TTS has a longer pause between everything cause it was made to read stuff not for screen reading, so everything feels slower than it is.

So it's really sad. Eloquence is still a 32-bit app, so will not work on the newest Pixels. Google TTS' newer local models are sluggish with TalkBack, and cannot speak quickly, as many have found out when working around the fact that TalkBack doesn't use the newer model natively. And it's sluggish when reading long pieces of text, like this one. And there iOS is, with tons of voices to choose from. And I get it, I should be thankful that we have even ESpeak, but when you come home from a stressful day at work, what do you want to hear?

Just finished watching Samsung Unpacked.
"A new era for Mobile AI!"
Ugh.

This is going to be a minor iterative year for Galaxy Fans. The hardware is only getting small changes. The major claims about AI mostly come from Google Gemini (which Google PAINSTAKINGLY kept reiterating would be on "android" phones, not just Galaxy phones).

And we glossed over a lot of the things that might impact folks daily use, like Exynos chips vs Qualcomm chips.

When pocket computers are THIS expensive, I think we need to see more than a handful of translation features and photo editing tools.

We did get a sneak peek at this new Galaxy Donut CG render though. So that was cool.

I'd love to be part of a podcast or something similar again. Something tech related if at all possible where we just talk about all things related to tech.

Working for @novalauncher and having been using Android and iOS for 13+ years plus numerous other tech related stuff should give me a pretty good advantage to talking tech.

Finding one to join is likely the hard part of it all.

Of course Apple is going to support RCS, they literally have to as it’s the replacement for SMS and afaik required for 5G certification. They dragged their feet to try and pretend they weren’t interested, and the people who suffered most were their own customers who got a crap experience.

This is how Apple weaponizes their own users.

But hey, I guess it is one less barrier for me ever considering using an iPhone? 🤷‍♂️ Now let’s do sideloading.

So yesterday, I grabbed a Braille display from work that is compatible with TalkBack's current Braille support. I opened a book in Google Play Books. I began to read. I crossed a page boundary, and continued reading. And again. And I didn't have to press any other button but the panning key to scroll forward to the next line of Braille. I still saw "page content," but it looks like the Play Books team has indeed made one able to read continuously. Pretty nice!
