Elvet Bridge, Durham City.
Top is a painting (Louise J. Rayner) c1900, bottom is my photo from last week.
Such a beautiful city, this bridge takes you up the hill to the castle and cathedral, got to be one of my favourite places in the UK.
Great to see the nacreous clouds locally yesterday, these are hardly ever seen in the UK as very specific conditions are needed, and as one of the highest clouds in the atmosphere, it is typically referred to as 'mother-of-pearl.
Ice crystals form and refract the light rays to give vivid rainbow effects.
Dunvegan Castle, the mighty Hebridean stronghold of Clan MacLeod which has dominated much of the northern part of the Isle of Skye and the lands and waters around it for some eight centuries. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/skye/dunvegancastle/index.html
Windsor Castle is not right in London, but it is worth the little side excursion to get there. Only a short drive away from the busyness of London, it is the burial site of the late beloved Queen Elizabeth II, and in close proximity to Oxford.
A distant view of mighty Duart Castle, standing guard over the entrance to the Sound of Mull from its location at the eastern tip of the Isle of Mull. A stone defensive structure was probably first built here in the mid-1200s. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/mull/duartcastle/index.html
Some people say it's exhilarating, some say they are totally nuts... 🥶😳
A New Years Day dip at Queensferry, the day peaked at 2° 😲 guessing the water wasn't any warmer 😄
Craigievar Castle south of Alford in Aberdeenshire. One of Scotland's best preserved and most authentic tower houses, it was described as a "strange and curious old castle" by Queen Victoria after an unannounced visit in 1879. Mighty Duart Castle, dominating the sea lanes around the eastern side of the Isle of Mull. Probably fortified from much earlier, a stone castle was first built here in the mid 1200s and it became the base of Clan Maclean in 1367. Huntly Castle in Aberdeenshire, which has seen more than its share of conflict and history. Over a period of six centuries four different castles in three slightly different locations under two different names were attacked eight times.
