I think @pixelfed is the first fediverse project to ship a list (1.6 MB) of cloud server ip address ranges that are used to block access to auth and api routes by default.

Abuse and spam mitigation are crucial to any platforms success, and I hope other projects copy us.

Looks like even more brands are going to vanish from Twitter soon.

One of Twitter's big advantages over Mastodon for brands and advertisers was that it was supported by a range of social media and ad management tools.

Not anymore!

Via Mashable:

"Microsoft is going to drop Twitter from its Microsoft Advertising plan next week, according to the company.

"Users will no longer be able to access their Twitter account through its Digital Marketing Center's social media management tool, according to Microsoft. Users will also no longer be able to schedule, create, or manage tweets or tweet drafts. In addition, users won't be able to view their past tweets and engagement on the Microsoft Advertising platform."

Hello Fediverse!

@Flipboard is currently a walled garden.

It's a beautiful, highly curated walled garden filled with content from the worlds best publishers and creators curated by Flipboard's editorial team as well as our community of magazine makers.

If you're interested in particular topics, you can join Fediverse groups. They work like this:

  1. Join a group by following its account, leave by unfollowing
  2. Posts from that group will start appearing in your timeline
  3. Post to a group by mentioning it in a public post

The groups work via third party services, the most popular ones at the moment are https://chirp.social and https://a.gup.pe.

I’m just gonna come out and say it.

I really don’t use the official iOS app so I hadn’t seen this change but I took a look and I was quite surprised 😯 by this. Mastodon, and the by design, are supposed to be decentralized. That’s what makes them so great.

But, on the official Mastodon app, the join mastodon.social button obviously gears ones, especially those new to Mastodon, to that instance. The “join other servers” button can easily be missed.

This is exactly what is so exciting about the fediverse - the way it all links together, the ability to follow people from different services without lock-in.

In my Mastodon feed I see pictures from Pixelfed, posts from a Lemmy group, videos posted on Peertube, Bookwyrm reading statuses, blog posts from Plume. And what's more, I can interact with them all - from inside Mastodon! - and have interesting conversations, all without anyone needing to leave where they're at.

@ajsadauskas has already provided an example of their Pixelfed to follow, but honestly I'd recommend just experimenting - sign up for some accounts at various places, follow them in your 'main' account and see what it's like when you post stuff elsewhere - it's really good to get first-hand experience.

What is the difference between PascalCase, camelCase, Kebab-case, and Snake_case?

It all started in programming all the way back in the 90s, but it is very useful in today's world of , most specially in the .

Let's go over each.

  1. . First letter of every word should be capitalised.

e.g.

  1. . First letter of the first word should be in lowercase. Every other word after should be capitalised.

e.g.

  1. -case. Words are separated with a hyphen.

e.g. -Is-an-Example

  1. . Words are separated with an underscore.

e.g.

Most software and apps will not convert Snake_case and Kebab-case hashtags into an active link, so these two are rarely used.

PascalCase is the preferred format as it makes it very easy to read hashtags with multiple words. A camelCase is fine as well.

Well, that's as short as it can be.

Since I'm seeing new folks arriving, a few thoughts for you:

  1. Take a moment to read: https://fedi.tips

  2. Hashtags are your friend. Follow them. Use them. Capitalize each word in them

  3. You will miss things. That is the point

  4. For accounts you don't want to miss, click the bell in the profile or make a list

  5. Boost the toots

  6. Be here to make connections

  7. No algorithm means post what you want

  8. Add alt-text to images

All that does feel like some big new steps.

So does moving to integrate Mastodon identify verification into software itself.

"The end goal is that I can put e.g. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Legoktm as a URL item and Mastodon will be able to verify it."

I'm going to be watching this VERY closely and supporting it however I can .👀

I've since added some more related resources to this topic.

Everywhere I see personal knowledge base software projects pop up. Imho collective knowledge gardening is way to go.

And here's yet another example of how Elon is eroding the usefulness of Twitter.

One of the useful things about Twitter has been the ability to Tweet at or send a message to companies, and get a response from a staff member.

On the company's end, there are various customer service platforms that handle those customer service requests.

But with Elon now charging $US42,000 per month or more for API access, offering customer service support through Twitter is no longer financially viable:

"On Thursday, Intercom announced that the company would no longer support Twitter Integration due to the recent API pricing changes implemented by Twitter.

"Intercom's clients span many industries and include companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Udemy, and H&R Block using its customer support products and services."
