I think @pixelfed is the first fediverse project to ship a list (1.6 MB) of cloud server ip address ranges that are used to block access to auth and api routes by default.
Abuse and spam mitigation are crucial to any platforms success, and I hope other projects copy us. #pixelfed#safety#fediverse
Looks like even more brands are going to vanish from Twitter soon.
One of Twitter's big advantages over Mastodon for brands and advertisers was that it was supported by a range of social media and ad management tools.
Not anymore!
Via Mashable:
"Microsoft is going to drop Twitter from its Microsoft Advertising plan next week, according to the company.
"Users will no longer be able to access their Twitter account through its Digital Marketing Center's social media management tool, according to Microsoft. Users will also no longer be able to schedule, create, or manage tweets or tweet drafts. In addition, users won't be able to view their past tweets and engagement on the Microsoft Advertising platform."
@dell I think whoever has a suspended or permanently banned #birdsite account should post whatever story that #ElonMusk didn't like on here instead since he can't shut down #Mastodon or the #Fediverse.
It's a beautiful, highly curated walled garden filled with content from the worlds best publishers and creators curated by Flipboard's editorial team as well as our community of magazine makers.
But it's still a walled garden. Today that begins to change.
We've moved four of our most popular #curation desks into the Fediverse for you to enjoy.
@mike Mike what's the business model of #Flipboard now? Do you rely on advertising revenue frim your mobile app, or deals with media publishers, or user subscriptions?
What will make your business sustainable and how will opening up to the #fediverse help your goal?
@feditips
Learning something new everyday #Mastodon and #Fediverse having new features from a third-party provider is always impressive to me as opposed to the lockdown of #Twitter and their api.
I really don’t use the official #Mastodon iOS app so I hadn’t seen this change but I took a look and I was quite surprised 😯 by this. Mastodon, and the #Fediverse by design, are supposed to be decentralized. That’s what makes them so great.
But, on the official Mastodon app, the join mastodon.social button obviously gears ones, especially those new to Mastodon, to that instance. The “join other servers” button can easily be missed.
This is exactly what is so exciting about the fediverse - the way it all links together, the ability to follow people from different services without lock-in.
In my Mastodon feed I see pictures from Pixelfed, posts from a Lemmy group, videos posted on Peertube, Bookwyrm reading statuses, blog posts from Plume. And what's more, I can interact with them all - from inside Mastodon! - and have interesting conversations, all without anyone needing to leave where they're at.
@ajsadauskas has already provided an example of their Pixelfed to follow, but honestly I'd recommend just experimenting - sign up for some accounts at various places, follow them in your 'main' account and see what it's like when you post stuff elsewhere - it's really good to get first-hand experience.
@picard@ajsadauskas This sounds great but it goes to the core of the thing I can’t wrap my head around about the #Fediverse. Should I have an account on each of the services, or one account to post everything from?
So…. it looks like after decades of open secrets, and years of hard work to track down his victims, my friends over at BBC are very close to holding #TimWestwood legally accountable for his #predatory behavior with girls and women over the last 30 years…. and the #BBC for looking the other way. Once again, it’s about time.
Thank you Chi and Ruth, for your work. Please boost it if you can. Spread word. Thanks #fediverse.
I called a session about how companies like #Fastly can be good stewards of the #Fediverse and grow it sustainably, for people, projects, and the planet.
The West Lake Street Bridge dates to 1916. It was the very first double-decker bascule bridge constructed over the #ChicagoRiver. The tracks are on the upper level, while the lower deck is for cars and pedestrians.
I had some earlier discussions with @mike_hales@bashrc and @bhaugen that led me to pen down some notes on how I'd like to see #Fediverse#SocialNetworking and #Wiki technology to be combined, in what I called "Social Knowledge Fabrics".
I started the #delightful project. It's similar to Awesome project on #Github by Sindre Sorhus, but only curates lists related to #FOSS, #OpenScience and #OpenData resources. If @abundance wants that, they might maintain their own sublist and be part of https://delightful.club that is steadily growing.
And here's yet another example of how Elon is eroding the usefulness of Twitter.
One of the useful things about Twitter has been the ability to Tweet at or send a message to companies, and get a response from a staff member.
On the company's end, there are various customer service platforms that handle those customer service requests.
But with Elon now charging $US42,000 per month or more for API access, offering customer service support through Twitter is no longer financially viable:
"On Thursday, Intercom announced that the company would no longer support Twitter Integration due to the recent API pricing changes implemented by Twitter.
"Intercom's clients span many industries and include companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Udemy, and H&R Block using its customer support products and services."
Hallo Alle!
