@butter, @dessalines, I've grown quite fond of Friendica for that very thing, following things, not just people. Not only does it let me follow topics via tags, but things like #lemmy and #guppe get added as "forums", plus I can follow any #RSS or #Atom feed. All of these are added the same as adding any other contact (follow). All of these different ways of following things get listed in the same area of my account, as "contacts", where they can be easily separated into to multiple groups (lists). Each followed hashtag, forum, contact group, or protocol type is always listed down the side of my page where I can simply click on it to filter my current feed.
I know that other #fediverse / #ActivityPub interfaces such as #Pleroma, #Akkoma, #Misskey, #Calckey, #Hubzilla, and #Streams have some/all of these capabilities, each to their own extent. However, having played around extensively with all of them, I've come to find that #Friendica is the one that works best for me. And at the end of the day, this is the only thing that matters. It may be a bit time consuming, but trying all the things is the best (only?) way to see how they'll work for you.
@FediGarden@foozmeat maybe if you look at it like this, yes. But the Number of servers was very low for a very long time, so naturally the percentage of old servers can not be high.
I knew I should have made the timeouts on API calls user-configurable in the latest Relatica :(. Unfortunately some standard queries to Friendica take way way too long and the 30 second limit is just not enough time. One of my favorite Groups (Mastodon lists) often takes just more than 30 seconds to return with its timeline data. So I'm SOL on that in the current release. Working on fixing that substantially is something I hope to double back around to once Relatica is released at 1.0 status. In the mean time, bumping up that timeout value and making it a user-configurable setting is high priority for the next release.
PS this sort of stuff is why I am still keeping it in beta. People who knowingly sign up for these sorts of growing pains roll with it. Random people who found the app on the website understandably would not.
For months I have wanted to see a group dedicated to discussing Mastodon for both potential users as well as for experienced ones. I wanted to create such a list and would have done so but for several reasons I’m not in a position to deal with aspects of moderation and list maintenance. Thanks to Top Tech Tidbits I have just been alerted that a new list has been created for this purpose. To be clear this is not a list that I own or moderate but I hope to be a frequent contributor. To subscribe, send email to

Once your subscription has been confirmed you can send public messages to the list by using the email address

The latest beta of the Relatica mobile and desktop Friendica client, version 0.6.0, has just been released. This release includes three major new features: blocks management, post/comment filtering, and image gallery management functions. It also includes fixes for the jankiness and apparent freezing that could be seen when processing posts coming back from the server, a problem where delayed logins could prevent the app from loading, and several other bug nits. The CHANGELOG file has more details. The Install file can be used for installing Android, Linux, and Windows version. Apple has it in review for iOS and macOS users so should be available within the next 24 hours. If you would like to join the beta on Apple platforms feel free to DM me here, on Matrix, or in the Relatica Matrix room. Enjoy! #relatica#friendica#fediversegitlab.com/mysocialportal/rela…
I noticed the below post seems not to distribute properly. It took an hour to start distributing (hourglass showing) and arrived with broken image links at Mastodon, and not at all (yet) at pixelfed.
Is this a bug or some kind of user operating error?
I wonder if anyone has looked across #fediverse platform themes yet, to identity which are pulling #Google fonts, a serious #privacy tracking threat. Which platform is most resistant to and prioritising privacy?
Users should know if their instance is intentional about protecting them from surveillance #capitalism.
Like #Friendica, /kbin can ban trolls from participating in groups.
Unlike Friendica, you can remove posts local to where the group is hosted.
Unfortunately, the offending comments still appears in user timelines because other Fediverse servers do not delete after comments are removed locally.
Another alternative could be #Calckey which supports groups through "Channels". However these do NOT federate.
It will depend on the platform. For example, #Friendica (and to an extent #Hubzilla and #Streams), the owner of the group (and anyone else given moderation access) can block accounts. There is also chirp.social which can also block accounts.
Then there is #GNUsocial, which is a rebranded #StatusNet itself a rebranded #Laconica (the first #Fediverse software, c. 2008) have built-in groups feature; which IIRC, can also block users if needed.
Personally, services like Guppe really need to add moderation features, otherwise, what you just described will more likely happen.
Mammoth for Mastodon is now available to download for free on the App Store! 🎉
It has the easiest way to join Mastodon with a great onboarding flow and no need to think about what server to join, it’s full-featured with complete Mastodon feature parity, and fully customizable to tweak it just the way you want and make it yours.
