This is hilarious. It appears that Twitter is DDOSing itself.
The Twitter home feed's been down for most of this morning. Even though nothing loads, the Twitter website never stops trying and trying.
In the first video, notice the error message that I'm being rate limited. Then notice the jiggling scrollbar on the right.
The second video shows why it's jiggling. Twitter is firing off about 10 requests a second to itself to try and fetch content that never arrives because Elon's latest genius innovation is to block people from being able to read Twitter without logging in.
This likely created some hellish conditions that the engineers never envisioned and so we get this comedy of errors resulting in the most epic of self-owns, the self-DDOS.
Feedback is extremely welcome. This is a loving document, it can only be honed and get better with loving input from other users. What are your best tips for #creators?

Twitters Hauptkonkurrent #Threads ist jetzt etwas mehr als eine Woche alt und ich hatte ja schon angedeutet, dass vom anfänglichen Wachstum durchaus etwas in unseren Zahlen zu sehen war. Deswegen jetzt nochmal ein kleines Update:
Die Zugriffe über von @heiseonline gepostete Artikel auf #Mastodon bleiben weiterhin stabil, nach den der jüngsten Entwicklungen bei #Twitter gab es zuletzt zumindest ein geringes Wachstum.
It speaks of problematic developments under #ElonMusk and says, that for example #Nazi content is now barely moderated over there. And also that the significance of Twitter shrinks.
Am Donnerstag jährt sich die Aktivierung des Accounts von @heiseonline zum ersten Mal und ich will da im Newsticker eine kleine Bilanz ziehen.
Gibt es dafür Hinweise und Vorschläge oder vielleicht auch Bitten, was ich da erwähnen könnte.
Hab ja hier regelmäßig Zwischenstände verkündet, auf diese Zahlen will ich mich da beziehen.
Make use of #Lists, and when you follow someone make a habit of adding them to a list right then.
It's quick and easy:
Set up at least three or four lists. You can number them to arrange the list display order.
After you hit FOLLOW, click the three vertical dots and choose "Add or Remove from lists". This will bring up your lists and you can click to add the follow to one or more lists.
They will make your #Fediverse life so much better.

Auf die Artikel von heise online der vergangenen Woche kamen jeden Tag mehr Zugriffe über #Mastodon als über #X bzw. #Twitter!
Da sind ein paar Effekte drin (das nochmalige Teilen am Wochenende bringt erneut Zugriffe, am Freitag ging der Twitter-Bot nicht), aber die Tendenz ist deutlich: Während Mastodon/ das #Fediverse stabil bleiben, geht es bei X abwärts.
Ach Mist, das war's dann wohl mit meinen Statistiken zu #Mastodon als Trafficquelle für @heiseonline:
Hab gerade bemerkt, dass die schönen neuen Vorschaukarten den URL-Parameter abschneiden, über den wir überhaupt erfahren, dass Besuche von hier kommen. Je mehr Instanzen diese neue Vorschau nun anzeigen, desto mehr Einstiege werden darüber kommen und für uns nicht mehr erkennbar.
Weiß nicht, ob wir das überhaupt beheben können/wollen.

Aktuell sind wir ja etwas blind, wenn es um den Traffic auf @heiseonline geht, der von #Mastodon kommt. Aber es gibt zumindest Indizien:
Der von mir gestern zu China gepostete Link hat fast zehnmal so viele Besuche aus unbekannter Quelle bekommen, wie sichtbar über Mastodon – und gleichzeitig fast keine anderen mehr. Wenn auch nur die Hälfte davon von Mastodon kommt, wäre #Twitter als Trafficquelle längst überholt.
Still too many thinks Mastodon is one website with "too strict rules", but it's also hard to explain without using any technical terms that it's multiple "services" and you can still see everyone's posts regardless of what site you have account on. Many don't realize that there are a lot of us.
I do get why people are reluctant to join, but at the same time I'm frustrated about those "I won't join because it's too politically left" or "I won't join because reasons". They don't realize they can find their own community. This bugs the hell out of me. #Mastodon#MastodonMigration#TwitterMigration#Twitter#RIPTwitter#TwitterDown

Die rund 62.000 Follower von @heiseonline verteilen sich ganz schön übers #Fediverse. Mit Abstand am größten natürlich mastodon.social, aber danach wird's doch recht vielfältig. Insgesamt über 1900 Instanzen kommen da zusammen. Die #Föderation funktioniert, würd ich sagen. Auch wenn die Dominanz schon groß ist.

One year ago today November 18, 2022 was the Twitter Lockout, and in one amazing day a quarter million new users flocked to Mastodon. Not everyone stayed, but a great many did. We have continued to confront disruptive growth, while striving to hold onto ideals of community, kindness and respect for each other. Is Mastodon perfect? No, but today, one year later, the state of our platform is strong. Open social media is thriving.
