This is hilarious. It appears that Twitter is DDOSing itself.
The Twitter home feed's been down for most of this morning. Even though nothing loads, the Twitter website never stops trying and trying.
In the first video, notice the error message that I'm being rate limited. Then notice the jiggling scrollbar on the right.
The second video shows why it's jiggling. Twitter is firing off about 10 requests a second to itself to try and fetch content that never arrives because Elon's latest genius innovation is to block people from being able to read Twitter without logging in.
This likely created some hellish conditions that the engineers never envisioned and so we get this comedy of errors resulting in the most epic of self-owns, the self-DDOS.
It speaks of problematic developments under #ElonMusk and says, that for example #Nazi content is now barely moderated over there. And also that the significance of Twitter shrinks.
One year ago today November 18, 2022 was the Twitter Lockout, and in one amazing day a quarter million new users flocked to Mastodon. Not everyone stayed, but a great many did. We have continued to confront disruptive growth, while striving to hold onto ideals of community, kindness and respect for each other. Is Mastodon perfect? No, but today, one year later, the state of our platform is strong. Open social media is thriving.
Feeling a lot of love today for loyal Mastodon pioneer and anchor account George Takei @georgetakei for demonstrating the courage of his convictions. George migrated here last year and never looked back. He continues to share frequent insightful and entertaining posts.
Thank you George! You make Mastodon a better place!
In December, we started to federate the accounts of some Flipboard publishers and in February, we introduced Magazines to the fediverse. Now, we’re taking two important steps: federating the accounts of 400 creators and expert curators; and enabling two-way communication so that new followers and fediverse activity are visible and actionable in the Flipboard app.
To learn more about this, take a look at our blogpost:
Thanks so much to everyone who has given feedback on what we’ve done so far. We welcome your thoughts and comments as we continue on our journey to fully federate Flipboard.
A year can go by in a flash. And that’s certainly how I feel as @Flipboard marks the first birthday of our Mastodon editorial desks. We tentatively dipped our toes into the water, not sure what to expect. What we quickly discovered was a smart, engaged community of people truly curious about our world for all its virtues and faults.
We instantly observed far more replies, favorites and boosts than we ever saw on X (Twitter) even though we had many more followers there. By November, we abandoned X to focus on Mastodon and a few other platforms.
When we launched our Mastodon accounts, we had no idea that Flipboard itself would federate, which is a work in progress. In recent months, we’ve federated our editorial curation from the app, greatly expanding your options to follow the topics you’re most interested in, such as news, politics, sports, entertainment, etc. And we’re in the process of federating publisher Flipboard accounts so that you can follow their topical Magazines. Already, you can find accounts such as Smithsonian Magazine, Euronews, Frommers, CBS Sports and SPIN.
Thank you for all of your feedback and support. If you like our work, please boost this post and help us grow our audience.
“Thousands of scientists are cutting back on Twitter, seeding angst & uncertainty.”
That survey with only a 5% response rate went viral & got me wondering about other evidence & how the #ScienceTwitter#MastodonMigration was panning out.
tl;dr There's been a big recent surge here; the future of #ScienceMastodon looks bright; ScienceX is materially diminished tho the network is still there.
Today, we're beginning to federate a selection of publishers based in Germany and the U.K. We've also introduced @FlipboardDE, a new profile for the Mastodon community in Germany. In the first test, we are partnering with 21 publishers to federate their profiles and Magazines. Follow the profile to see all the stories they are posting on Flipboard, or topically curated Magazines to get coverage on specific areas of interest. Here's a blogpost that explains more.
Here are all the accounts you can follow for federated publishers in the United Kingdom. To find their Magazines, simply search for the publisher profile and you should see a list of everything they're curating.
Make use of #Lists, and when you follow someone make a habit of adding them to a list right then.
It's quick and easy:
Set up at least three or four lists. You can number them to arrange the list display order.
After you hit FOLLOW, click the three vertical dots and choose "Add or Remove from lists". This will bring up your lists and you can click to add the follow to one or more lists.
They will make your #Fediverse life so much better.
Months after @tagesschau and @ZDF from Germany, yet still one of the earlier public broadcaster here on #Mastodon and the #Fediverse: The #BBC has arrived.
Also with their own instance, just as pioneered by @heiseonline 😉
Feedback is extremely welcome. This is a loving document, it can only be honed and get better with loving input from other users. What are your best tips for #creators?
My name is Ahmed, I graduated in Literature, and I'm currently working as a copywriter. Above all, I'll love reading novels.
My recent fav novel is The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano. Currently I'm reading Lucy by Jamica Kincaid. If you're a #literature enthusiast, I'd love to connect with you. Also, I'm always open to get book recommendations from others. So, do drop your favs.
I'll do it again in #english, maybe it is of interest for others too:
@heiseonline is on of the biggest official accounts on #Mastodon by a german media organization. It's now a year old and I had a look into the ~62k followers. Turns out, that federation in the #fediverse seems to work: Less than a fourth are from mastodon.social, the rest are on more than 1900 different instances.
It's been six months since @Flipboard launched our first editorial desks on Mastodon. How useful is this account to you? What feedback or questions do you have?
Bookwyrm might be a good place to collect all kinds of academic reviews in an open space aka the #Fediverse. One could even automate things, or invite for review texts through Mastodon or email (with a Python script translating the different categories). Maybe the academic instance would need a slightly different design, without ratings, and cover images being less prominent. Yet there's potential.
