Hi Fedi Family,
In 2008 Californians voted for Prop8 that defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman in the California constitution. While this was defeated in courts this draconian Prop8 language is still in the California constitution. Justice tHomas and the right wing SCOTUS is openly hinting at destroying precedent and trampling rights. If they overturned Obergefell - the Prop8 language in the California Constitution will act as a “trigger law”, raining havoc on queer families like mine across California.
Please spread the word to vote “YES” to repeal Prop8 (2008) from the California constitution in Nov 2024. Talk to your friends, family and colleagues about it.

Boosts appreciated.

Pay attention to what's happening in this case: the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals just essentially ruled that it's fully legal to jail journalists for reporting leaked information, or any information they obtain from government officials without going through "proper channels."

This is a serious issue for in , and and we should hope the Supreme Court sets things right quickly. https://www.texasobserver.org/priscilla-villarreal-journalist-la-gordiloca-fifth-circuit/ via @TexasObserver

Senate committee approves legislation to impose stronger ethics standards on Supreme Court justices (apnews.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court would have to abide by stronger ethics standards under legislation approved on Thursday by the Senate Judiciary Committee, a response to recent revelations about donor-funded trips by justices. The bill faced united opposition from Republicans, who said it could “destroy” the court.

Good news, fellow Black people! The SCOTUS decision ending affirmative action doesn't apply to military college!. So we're good enough to get shot to pieces in [insert brown country here], but not good enough to go to an elite institution! Yay!

Dear Americans,

Affirmative action was never about admitting unqualified Black kids. It was always about ensuring qualified Black kids could also get accepted despite a world of systemic racism.

The “unqualified admission” you’re thinking of are legacy students—like how Kavanaugh got into Yale.

And there was reporting/testimony he sexually assaulted Dr. Ford and at least one other classmate.

So basically if the Chevron Deference is overturned, we become an 1850s country again.

Lead, Mercury, Arsenic, Asbestos, PM2.5 on steroids, Chlorofluorocarbons destroying the Ozone, polluted waters, fungal illnesses, the return of tB and measles.

Overturning Chevron is a worse coup than anyone clearly is currently imagining.

It affirms the end of the post-Gilded Age governance.

It's intended to enslave and kill 300million.

Never forget that the thing that made it possible for to kill affirmative action was racist Republican voters electing the most dangerous traitor in US history who appointed paid-off justices that perjured themselves in confirmation hearings.

Kavanaugh: "Just to be clear, no doctor can be forced to... perform abortions."

Kav continues his unbroken streak of asking the "Class was moving a little too fast for me" questions

But, can we just pause here to say that it's ridiculous that SCOTUS is very worried about doctors being "forced" to perform abortions (they're not) but don't care about [checks notes] WOMEN BEING FORCED TO BRING A PREGNANCY TO TERM AGAINST THEIR WILL.

FYI.

Via Elie Mystal:

will hear arguments in a case designed to kill the wealth tax. I'll say again... there is nothing that you care about that the cannot destroy while you aren't watching.

Of course we are now debating the definition of the word "income" based on studies of "law & linguistics." :( Textualism is so fucking stupid sometimes.

Jackson asks the right question: "Why are we talking about the common meaning of income instead of the legal meaning?"

Alito turned the whole idea of deterrence on its head, arguing that giving a immunity for attempting a coup will make future coups less likely.

Hard to overstate how utterly bonkers this is.
