Language, Thought and Reality
Selected Writings of Benjamin Lee Whorf

The pioneering linguist Benjamin Whorf (1897–1941) grasped the relationship between human language and human thinking: how language can shape our innermost thoughts. His basic thesis is that our perception of the world and our ways of thinking about it are deeply influenced by the structure of the languages we speak.

@appassionato @bookstodon @linguistics Well, that's a bit too much of hype, because there is very little evidence that Whorf's basic thesis is relevant in the real world. The only artefact I am aware of is a study on colour perception that is different for speakers of languages like Russian that have two words for (denoting and as basic colours).

Learning about Iranian using arc as persistence technique, I wanted to see how that works in practice. Made a write-up - turns out this could be semi-stealthy, at least on servers! https://safecontrols.blog/2023/10/25/azure-arc-as-persistence-technique-stealthier-than-one-would-think-on-linux-servers/

Getting into working with and is proving painful thus far. I feel like almost zero of my prior experience is transferable. My time spent managing and servers in the past yields zero benefit. Sure, the Azure CLI is sane enough, because I know how to use the terminal.

Getting an overview of the Azure resources I need is horrible though. I need some 15 different services to get a simple multi-container app with storage and DB to run, and configuration is paaaaain 😣

Microsoft, quietly, has published a guide on how to download and install Linux.

No... Seriously... It is not a joke...

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/linux/install

The article was published September 29, 2023 (9 days ago).

The guide provides every option available, too. Starting with using their Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), to using a Virtual Machine, and even on "Bare Metal" alongside Windows.

That's right, Microsoft now tells you how to dual-boot Linux. 🤯

rdnielsen,
@rdnielsen@mastodon.online avatar

@Linux_Is_Best - This looks promising, barring a hidden EEE strategy, but there's an interesting bit of information missing. Given MS' trend toward subscriptions and , anyone wishing to use a client to connect using the protocol are constrained to use . Speculation about the reason for this omission could go in several different directions.

Attackers are now attempting to move laterally into cloud environments via SQL Server instances—a method previously seen in VMs and Kubernetes clusters but not in SQL Server.

After basically the whole cloud was hacked (see list of related sources on https://karl-voit.at/cloud/ ), the first follow-up incidents went public caused by missing containment actions:

60,000 emails were stolen from 10 accounts
https://www.reuters.com/world/us/chinese-hackers-stole-60000-emails-us-state-department-microsoft-hack-senate-2023-09-27/

If you didn't understand until now: basically EVERYTHING at Microsoft got hacked and Microsoft can't (or won't) get rid of the intruders. Everything authenticated by Microsoft is tainted. Even auth.

This also affects all customers of Azure and their services.
