We've just passed #MayDay #Beltane #Ūsiņi in the Latvian tradition- all based on the Cross-quarter day between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice.
In the Latvian division of the year, this marks the beginning of the #TimeOfFlowers
#bees #flowers #greening of the land ++ are associated with this time. I have a blog post with pics + vids of bees, flowers etc and link to another post about the roots of the Latvian celebration.

  1. I spotted a in the woods on the acreage. May not sound exciting, but I've never had a good sighting before (more in replies): they are stealthy + presumably mostly nocturnal. So it was very cool to see this one, and in its winter pelage (seasonal white fur) : even more cool! Vid links from YouTube and Spectra (smaller files) another vid + pics to follow

-- well I took these photos yesterday- Monday- even got the editing done last night, but no oomph to post before bed...lol
A couple of views from the around the acreage and in the still lots of snow around- though probably no more than half of usual, lots of bare spots as there always are, allowing glimpses of

Not sure how this will work- I don't want to make a separate post for each of these short , so I'll try one post with 5 links!
These are short with me jabbering about while out in the bush- you can watch them in order to be horrified by the dropping day by day or skip ahead to see me talk into the camera- rare- or skip to the last one for near glow! Okay, description is so long, links to follow!

In the woods on the farm today where I was harvesting deadwood for firewood. Light all day and around -22 at that time. Luckily inside this wood, no wind (outside, another story, slight, but still deadly).
has been getting us caught up, bit by bit-- still less than usual, overall.

Cool and a glow all afternoon, as we often have in mid-winter. Still mostly above average temps, and moderate snowfall, though we got a few more sticky inches last night (our normal at this time of year should be dry! 'warmer' winters are not all positive)

Day 14 Since reading more about her by chance, recently, I've been thinking a bit about the She seems more to stem from the primordial nature worship of Old Europe (the ancient pre-Indo-Europeans). (more to come on this some day soon). She's associated with birch trees in particular, so now I think of her whenever I see them! Next year's catkins on this one, I think?

Day 17 that was Sunday, so, a work day and so the pic is from the moving car on the I was talking a little to @richardgrant a while back when an earlier photo in this thread showed some Tamarack / Larix laricina ( I had a question mark on the id then, just because with snow/frost/ice covering the trees, it was hard to see what trees were there). This view shows Tamaracks again--continued:

Tomorrow is the between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice- this is the real reason for all the end of October/ beginning of November cultural/religious celebrations that have developed in various places. Traditionally for northern Europe this is the beginning of . It's been pretty accurate here in recent years- late Oct or early Nov has seen lasting for us. this year it started Oct 23

From The Conversation: If the planet wears an Arctic ice cap, then the boreal forests are a loose-knit headband wrapped around its ears, covering large portions of Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia and Siberia. Now, the forests may be shrinking as climate change pushes them northward. Here’s more: https://flip.it/3Uy8e9

Around 25-30cm of yesterday- probably a bit settled by now with some warmth coming from the soil melting it a bit underneath (making for heavier shovelling- I did an hour or so last night, my friend did as much this morning + cleaning the car- and there is probably another couple hours worth to do). It was this morning with forecast of clouds, so I went out for a few shots with sky.

A couple of small finely branched Dasiphora/Potentilla shrubs with small leaves in autumn colour, some green and dried flower heads-- all covered in little mounds of snow. The ground around is also snow-covered with variable blue shadows from trees and bumps in the snow.
