@noxblog wrote an excellent article about the recent moves made by Eugen and the Mastodon gGmbH and why treating other instances than mastodon.social as 2nd class is bad for the whole community.
For those looking for new #musicians on #Mastodon / #Fediverse to follow this #BandcampFriday, I highly recommend this .csv made by @radiofreefedi you can import in Preferences > Import & Export > Import > Following List > Merge! :MOULE_Happy:
I frequently see posts where instance admins are bemoaning Mastodon's lack of a given feature. Many times these are features that other Fedi microblogging systems like Akkoma/Pleroma already implement well.
So why aren't those as popular? Why are folks sticking with Mastodon?
Yeah, I know the web UI is nice, but I was wondering if there are any other benefits? New features (available from other clients)? Easier to implement?
I wonder how easy #Honk is to install, get running, and maintain.
Really pissed to find out that a block means nothing on #calckey or #mastodon. Feeling ick being able to see the former partner of a friend who I have blocked, because someone on blahaj.zone has replied to them and there they are now sitting in the local timeline. They really fucked my friend up for years with their sociopathic manipulation.
Now I find out that she can see me if I'm not set to private. Why can't a block be an actual fucking block?
This is the basic shit many folks have been asking for while devs just fuck around with their basic bro stuff.
I really don't want to leave the #Fediverse, but how the fuck is this safe??? How can I feel safe knowing that she can potentially see me? I'd be safer back on the bird site.
@jo We've been having some reports recently about blocking people and how it affects the platform's behaviour over at codeberg, we've been actually discussing this in the last 24 hours and we are trying to address all issues and provide a safe experience. Blocking a user should indeed mute them so that you don't see content from them. In participatory, open source projects though, unfortunately sometimes things break without instantly realizing it. We appreciate feedback on possible issues at codeberg, as well as practical help on dealing with these issues, to make #fedi a safe place for everyone.
I was just reading the discussion under #Mastodon's announcement about adding #quotes, and I found this observation interesting, so I'd like to quote @Valent's posts (since we already have this functionality in #Calckey 🥴).
I don't know if "quote posts" means something for Mastodon's terminology in the future, but one thing we did, a few months ago, as a fork of #Misskey, was to change our terminology from #Notes and #Renotes to #Posts and #Boosts. We also call our equivalent to a #Favorite a #Like (although we also have other emoji reactions). The idea behind this is that we want to promote the use of a more unified language across the #Fediverse, so that we can make communication between users on different #fedi platforms smoother. I think it's very important to try and co-exist in harmony in this unique and exciting federated universe, instead of every platform pushing their own "trademark" terminology, which mostly makes the experience more confusing for users discovering the #Fediverse. So I think that any change towards more common and self-explanatory terms on basic features would be a step in the right direction! :blobbonethumbsup:
When a #calckey user uses flavored markdown or uses an emoji reaction to a post from another #fedi client, what does it look like to a non-calckey user? 🤔
I know calckey can do like animated text and stuff that vanilla #Mastodon can't do, which is really cool, but I'm curious how humble Mastadonians like myself would experience those things.
"You asked for it, and it’s coming. Quote posts, search, and groups are on their way. In the meantime, check out the new onboarding experience launching today."
Stupid features which will negatively affect #fedi culture implemented to make #twexodees happy.
@atomicpoet@fediversenews Do they have a repository where you can submit bug reports or suggestions?
I can't seem to find any. I found one repo on GitHub but it has issues disabled. 🤔
YouTube videos and Twitch Clips aren't embedded properly nor image thumbnails presented in a decent way. It seems to fit them vertically then crop excess weirdly which makes all posts look bad.
All understandable if it's an early beta or alpha. Very curious about this and to see how it develops! :fedi:
The Bluesky closed beta going viral seems to have pulled some attention back to both anti-Black racism and general unwelcoming/ uninclusive design choices on Mastodon, which is good to see…and also I 😬 seeing white tech folks glomming onto a single POV as "What Black People Want."
Fedi needs wide-ranging user research for sure. But also if you're a white person interested in big platform conversations, it's probably a great idea to attend to more than one Black person who talks about it?
@kissane There's this pernicious myth that #Fedi is some monolithic dark cabal. Saying "Fedi should" is like saying "BLM should" or "third wave should."
Forget white tech guys, what about POC tech guys? Tech girls?
Open systems like ActivityPub (or the Internet even) are deliberately designed to provide the people with the opportunity to form things that suit them. But some seem to want it provided by some higher authority.
It's surrendering of power. It's a bad thing. It's how we got here.
#Introduction for my #Calckey account. See also @jules where I've been on #Mastodon for a few months and @jules@bookwyrm.social (weirdly they allow a . in the username despite it screwing up the tagging function) :bunhdthink:
I'm here for shiny new objects and slowly getting more into #Fedi stuff, obvs. Not a techy but with a layperson's interest in using new media, including socials. Also here for cuteness and fluffy stuff. Lots of time to watch #TV and #movies and read #novels (esp #SFF) because I'm sick with #longCOVID (#fatigue#PEM#BrainFog). 😷
Unlike many of you, I'm old! In my 50s, grew up with rotary phones and big chonky televisions, got cable when I was in highschool, email and dial-up internet in grad school. #Punk, #rock, #reggae, #soul, #r&b, those are my thing in music. I'm from the US but lived in Japan, Germany, and now Norway, so not all that American in some ways (still very much so in other ways). 🇺🇸 🇯🇵 🇩🇪 🇳🇴
Although the initial euphoria has died down a bit, it's still pretty fun to check in on #Fedi from #Calckey's lens. I especially like the channels (pictured in attached image), which are basically Calckey's built-in groups feature. Seems like you can't follow them from other parts of the #Fediverse like you can with #Friendica groups, but 1) the #UX is way nicer than Friendica's; and 2) I love that you can mark posts as local-only. Definitely something to watch for the long term.
