I can't seem to get people to take ecological collapse seriously, even some in the scientific community. They think it is 'extremist' and 'politically-driven'. Everything is politics, including denialism and ignorance. Every move we make as a society and individual is politics. We don't need to analyses the dipiction's level and types to see its spirit. The spirit is correct. #FoodSecurity#Agriculture#FoodSystem #environment#globalwarming
I remember feeling sorry for the insects that had been hit by a car. Now I feel sorry that people won't listen to why in so many places this rarely happens any more. The planet to going quiet, leaving us to our demise. Clue: it wasn't just the cars. #FoodSystem#biodiversity #environment#globalwarming
A consolidation of available evidence on #ultraprocessedfoods (UPFs) suggests they have significant & negative impacts on #health.
To some extent this (merely) confirms what many of already knew or suspected, but as the evidence continues to grow, the spectre of a #foodsystem intent on killing its consumers, start to draw parallels with #tobacco.
The Q. is who will go up against the powerful global food multinationals?
Should we be concerned about #ultraprocessed#food or does the increasingly shrill coverage of their 'dangers' obscure the more structural issues within the #foodsystem that require our #political attention?
Eric Robinson (Liverpool U) concludes, this hype may 'distract attention from much-needed government action to restrict food industry marketing & sales of the types of foods we already know are bad for health – foods higher in sugar, salt, saturated fat & calories'!
This talk gives a short overview on why the #FoodSystem is so important when we think about collapse. If a catastrophic event triggers a famine, this can lead to a downward spiral, which is hard to stop.
To highlight how this could happen, I also talk about an upcoming paper, which simulates the effects of a global catastrophic infrastructure loss on yields globally (https://zenodo.org/records/10118213).
A new study claims that global agriculture could become carbon-negative by 2050, removing more CO2 than it emits. The study explores various scenarios of dietary change and technological innovation that could achieve this goal. This would require a radical food system transformation involving all actors and sectors.
❓How to make the transition to sustainable #foodsystems easier?
The @EU_Commission will propose a dedicated legislative framework this autumn⤵️
