Have you ever noticed that there are certain directories everyone has? ~/Documents, ~/Downloads, ~/Desktop, and so forth? Some of them you don't need, some of them you might wish were named differently, but any time you rename or delete them, the originals reappear?
You see, these directories follow a standard so that all programs know where they are—with the right tools under your belt, you can customize them.
It's another priority thing:
Bluetooth isn't a priority for #OpenBSD
Having a cohesive OS with good docs isn't a priority for 90% of #Linux distros
Being remotely SANE isn't a priority for #Canonical
I get that it’s hot right now, but man, the user experience of LLMs being this bot you type text to seems like a huge step backwards compared to just integrating these AI features natively into products.
#sysadmin#linux
This is one thing I do not understand about Windows users. I'm headed to train an older user how to use 11. All he does is some emailing and some LibreOffice.
I'll be training him on an OS I don't use.
Now if I were to suggest #Linux, I guarantee you he'd throw a fit about "Not wanting to learn something new".
My guy, you already don't know something "old"!
Why not learn the thing that would stay mostly the same till you die?
I'm thinking of trying out running #OpenBSD on a server instead of #Ubuntu, because Derek Sivers recommended it for its security (particularly around the more controlled packaging).
I have basically zero experience with BSD, but a ton with #linux (redhat, ubuntu, arch, centos, amazon linux, etc.).
Any advice on making the transition? Is this a good move or unnecessary or bad?
New Blog Post: The backstory to the #MicroMirror project and why you might have started noticing lots of *.mm.fcix.net mirrors when downloading #Linux updates.
Somehow I installed #opensuse to require 3 passwords.. one for decrypting grub, one for decrypting the system and one to actually log in. I have no idea how I did that and idk if i should find that cool or annoying. Yes, the idea was to encrypt my drive, which would result in 2 passwords.. but 3? Idk man..
But then again, I kinda don't want to reinstall again. #linux
The benefits of using Linux over Windows are obvious; a truly Free and Private Operating systems that has zero interest in knowing who you are or profiting from that knowledge: an operating system designed to be responsive to your needs first and foremost, and to stay out of your way when you need it to: a system built upon the humanistic principles of free and open source software but that can still handle closed-source 'binary blobs' if you need it to.
Classically, every time I've tried Linux before (this is my fourth go at it) I've kept Windows around because, good as it was, Linux still had weaknesses. For me those centred mainly around Gaming, a vital part of my recreational life and one I need to keep around.
Since installing Garuda's Gaming edition of Linux last week I haven't logged into Windows even once, which has taken me by surprise even as familiar with Linux as I am. Valve's Proton and the gaming scene are so much more developed than last I looked and while there will be incompatible titles out there I feel I can expect more to work than ever before.
I implemented a complicated little plan to dual boot my drive...but now I find I'm wondering if I need to keep Windows around in any form. Garuda is just so good and so far it hasn't failed to do anything I've asked of it. Oh, I've plenty to learn yet and I've seen some inconsistent behaviour from it....but that's my exact experience of Windows as well.
As part of the installation process I cloned my original Windows drive to set up this new larger one, so the original drive is still around should I need Windows again. It's theoretically possible to wipe Windows from this one and move/enlarge the existing Linux partition-cluster to take the whole drive but even should that fail and I have to wipe and restart afresh it's not the end of the world. 🤔
Lots to think about but the prospect of finally being able to extricate myself entirely from the Windows ecosystem is a wonderful feeling already. #Linux#Garuda#Gaming#Windows
It makes me so, so happy to head to ProtonDB and see most, if not ALL of my #Steam library working with #Linux. 😊 💞
I truly do love this and wanna stay using #Arch for as long as possible. #Gaming is one of my biggest hobbies, so knowing I can game comfortably on Linux makes me incredibly happy! #LinuxGaming#PCGaming
